    Series 2/2a/3 confusion!

Went to look at a vehicle for parts yesterday. Supposedly a 1975 series 3. It is a shorty so maybe that is where the differences come in, but a lot of things didn't seem right so maybe some of the experts can shed some light.

Things out of place were: MPH speedo (the dash is a proper SIII one), had the larger earlier tail lights and no reverse lights, screwed on name plate on the back, number on the comp plate didn't match the plate on the firewall, door latches were the older type not the burst proof ones, door lock only on one side, door tops had older style locks up top instead of plastic ones at the bottom.

My vehicle is a 75 and it has a lot more mod cons than this - just wondering if it is a case of this one being augmented with earlier parts or if some 75 models were made like this?

    Any ideas?

    its a series....

ergo it could have parts anwhere from about 1948-1982 in it.

dont be surprised if its a bit of a bitza.

I would suggest that its had a new firewall fitted, the proof will be comparing the chassis number (which is the important one) to the plates.

The suffix "a" SIII had large Wipac stop tail lamps and didn't have anti-burst door locks, but they did have the plastic window latches.

The 88" SIII chassis is the fabricated out of 4 individual plates welded at the corners just like the S1/SII/SIIa and unlike the pressed clamshell chassis of the SIII 109. Australian assembled SIII had MPH speedos till "Metric Conversion day" 1974 (as did most Australian cars) an imported vehicle may have a MPH speedo much later than 1974.

I would be concerned about the compliance plate not matching the chassis number. If the firewall has been replaced the ID plate may have come across with the replacement. You need to check the compliance plate with the chassis number and that the prefix is the correct one for your model.

I probably won't end up getting it anyway now - was looking at it for the door tops and a few other bits but the door tops are rusty, have broken bolts so would not be usable. Not enough usable parts on it for me. Not unless it goes really cheap!

If you're going to keep the SIII for a while and need to get new doortops, take a look at the Rocky Mountain Products doortops*. They are an all aluminium frame, come fully glazed with locks fitted to the glass and not the hole that drips rain onto your right thigh.

They cost about $500 for the pair with shipping.

    * Same people as Rocky Mountain Parabolic springs.
