Its definatly only running on 7,,
and idling low,
and when in drive, at idle, its doing this grip and release thing--
which I assume is number 8 missing?
I cant connect the symptoms,, what would make it rattle AND miss?

I don't believe you own a compression gauge ....
Out with all 8 spark plugs
Turn the motor over by hand
With your thumb on a spark plug hole ... feel the compression pushing past
Repeat the thumb & turn motor on EACH cylinder, till you find the 1 with LOW or NO compression
Tell us what you find with that method first ...
Cheers
Mike
Not any more Mike;)
a long time since I've had to worry about compression,, my last L20B ran around 200,,
at work till 1pm then beers till 4ish so wont happen now till, gawd,, Monday?
Waranty people have been informed and asked for a quote to fix,, they actually included Land Rover in their list of preferred mechanics. $$:o$$
back to business,,
so if one cylinder is low/gone, are we looking at a dropped valve or hole in the piston? but why would it still knock?
Whatever is making it miss may have damaged the spark plug. At least that plug will be dirty from not running. It could be a push rod /rocker arm failure. It could be piston damage or head gasket failure. Another diagnostic is to remove the oil filler cap while idling, look for chuffing fumes. This would indicate piston/ring trouble.
If you can slide the spark plug or distributor end boot back on each plug lead you arrange a securely earthed wire to short each cylinder out and see which one/s are not running. Then remove the plug/s and look for damage.
Well .....
This ...
Plus this
basically has a high probability of ....
That is now most probably now covered by this ....
Which may now get you thinking of .....

Pedro,
All the best with it. I hope that it turns out to be something relatively simple. Have a good Christmas despite it.
