Could be a worn out sparkplug.
If there the originals I would think 100K would be about time to replace.

    Unhappy

    its a head gasket,
    and not just one,,,
    BOTH!

    car has only done 99k

we figure the rattle is compression entering the next cylinder,

3 were down to 30 odd
    a couple were around 150
    and the rest around 120.

I had always thought this one didnt go as hard as the green one.

    so, what to do,,
    just new gaskets?
or do i take this oportunity to fix the liner issue?
and if I'm looking at that, what about a 4.6 short motor?

    Bugger.

Still with the rest of the vehicle in such good nick what you do to the engine will be worth it. Trust all the work that goes in to it turns out well for you.

Have the heads checked for flatness, new gaskets and bolt them back on. This should keep it going and you can find another engine at your leisure.

    Hi Pedro,

Sorry to hear the news. What to do depends I guess on both your available budget and your need for confidence in your machine. As you can probably guess from my experience, my confidence in any non-flange linered Rover V8 is not high. For both me and Pam, we need to have confidence in the engine because of the places we go, and so in your shoes I would definitely look seriously at the 4.6 with flanged liners rather than spend the money on gaskets and head refacing and then wonder every time I went out if I was one of the lucky ones with an engine which was going to hold together.

I have just put a rebuilt short motor (4.6 with flanged liners) from TRS into mine, but then I didn't have a choice as you do. I certainly wasn't going to try a third factory new engine.

Whatever you decide, best of luck with it.

looks like this is the culprit--

The sticky is the advice straight from TRS,,
There is a notation on the box itself that states
"To suit 215 Buick or Rover V8"

it would appear all the different V8 heads are the same height??
