blackbox - economy from 20-22 mpg to 30-35mpg

I was going to post this on the l322 channel but thought it would be of general technical interest. Was doing a bit of dreaming about an l322 td6 and though they get good reviews by members on this forum I would search further afield. Sounds like they are great on the flat ground ie aus but not so in hilly country (most UK owners said they are underpowered especially on hills and not so good economy.) then came across this thread :

    2002 L322 TD6 Average MPG

people’s economy was going from 20-23 mpg to low to mid 30 mpg (including driving over hilly country). And that was calculating by actual fuel used not just by the onboard computer. Engine performance was markedly improved too.

How? Well yeah, a blackbox of course. From –

Speedhawk Diesel Tuning Boxes for Diesel Engine Cars, Vans and Tractors

hard to argue against this if these users are genuinely non aligned to the company. You can uninstall it and take it with you on to your next car too (if supported). Has a 28 day money back guarantee. Maybe the mapping on the td6 has a lot of room for improvement????

Seems like they have ones for most of the modern diesels landrover used.

Am I missing something here or is this somehow a con? surely everyone would have one on their car by now if they really could achieve these results.

(and no, i have no association with this mob either)

Have a look at the issue of 4WD Action, where they did a comparison test of all the chips/boxes on the market for AFAIR a BT50 Mazda.

AFAIR they only found one chip which increased economy and that was by about 1Lper 100Kms or about 10% and there was no power increase with that particular chip. All the rest gave more power but less economy, Which is sort of logical.

I would be VERY sceptical of owner testimonials. I once believed a trusted friend who I thought to be sensible and bought a Hiclone, and I knew him well. He claimed his economy increased to 26MPG from 20 MPG in a RRC.

I would be VERY surprised if BMW tuned their TD6 so poorly that gains of the claimed magnitude could be made. BMW is probably one of the if not THE world leader in modern common rail diesels. Or perhaps Mazda does a vastly better job of tuning their diesel.

If it seems too good to be true it usually is.
    Regards Philip A

Well I own a Td6 L322 and I've done 70,000Klms since buying it not long ago and I've never got anywhere near 20-23mpg regardless of speed or road conditions. My vehicle is totally standard and gets 30mpg without much effort and has enough power to overtake 50+mtr long road trains with ease. The improvement made buy the chip IMHO is covering another problem if the vehicle could only manage 20mpg before fitment. Some interesting points from that forum.

The first guy to talk about the chips has a TDV6, not a TD6. Might even be the smaller rangerover sport.
The second guy with the chip calculated 37mpg off an 80 mile trip.

You can't accurately do MPG's off less than three tanks. On a short trip like the 80 mile one the fuel tank being heated by the return fuel makes mpg's appear higher. You need to let the tank cool overnight.

They are using cheap and simple devices to fool the commonrail pressure sensors to read low and increase the rail pressure, thus injecting more fuel. Do these interefere with the in-dash mpg readout? I suspect they would.

BMW have led the passenger car diesel power race for some time. I'd happily call them leaders.
MTU and detroit don't even play that game, they're into comparitively low performance truck motors.
Mercedes have been playing catchup to BMW's diesels.

If you want a 200kw and 600Nm 3 litre compound turbocharged passenger car engine, it comes with the Bavarian badge.

Pat – I don’t doubt for a moment you are getting 30+ mpg. Official figures for the vehicle (I came across these on a number of sites and reviews of the car so assume they are correct??) city 19.6mpg, urban, 25mpg, extra urban 30.1mpg. I live in Hobart so am trying to get a better feel of what this car would do here – there aren’t any road trains here. For that matter, if things go at their current rate there won’t even be any trains here, that’s how neglected things have got.

I think to get around 20-22 mpg seems about right if you are living in a city, especially if there’s some hills. There was even a recent thread on aulro which you responded to and a couple of people wrote that they were achieving 12-13 l/100k - 13 litre/100k is 21.6 mpg.

Like others who have responded, I do find it hard to believe the improvements these people are claiming. Certainly need more miles under their belts before they go on a website proclaiming the virtues of the product. Though, lol, it’s not far off some I’ve read on aulro where people have used abstract methods for calculating fuel use. I’m waiting for someone to say they stopped filling her up once they got the second click after the third blue car drove past and lo and behold it used 2 litres/100km!

Still keeping a bit of hope that there is some truth here and this magical box of electrickery can shift the extra urban mpg economy into urban and city driving. Still am waiting for the proclaimers to update that thread with more ‘evidence’.

As for all the comments on world leaders of Diesel engines... you can't Pass Peugeot! they have been doing it for a VERY long time!

Yep have to agree here. Audi is another who go beyond BMW for technology, Mercedes Benz have far more diesel engines from a passenger perspective and the truck engines.... Well..... Nothing comes close to the power and economy they produce. I work for them.

Pibby - I don't work in MPG any more, so you'll have to do a bit of converting in your head, but our L322 TD6 gets around 11.5 to 12 L/100 in home/work driving mode. We live in the Adelaide Hills, so it is up and down via Mt. Lofty, so not in the least flat.

On a long highway run the trip computer will show 9.5 L/100 but I think it is closer to to 10L/100 in reality as I have never got more than 1000Kms out of a tank (100 litre tank).

Overall - I'd say we are getting about 26MPG.

BTW - they are a quick car if you consider the 3 tonne the engine has to pull around. Quick off the lights, that's for sure.
