Help Needed with a 300 TDI Noise

    Hi to all,
Im sure that this question has been asked and answered many time over in the past, but as Im new to this forum Im still trying to find my way around I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction,
We have a 1997 Defender 300 TDI the other day it started to make a very light rattle [Tinging ] sound from the front of the engine and seems to get louder as it gets hotter,
The noise sounded like a viscous fan bearing gone bad or an Idler bearing all of them have been checked and have all been replaced,
The best way I can think of trying to describe the noise is it sounds just like if you tap on the belt pulley with a screwdriver tip,
    [Tinging noise].
I have just about checked everything that can be checked but still cant quite locate the noise, Any help re this little or maybe large problem would be very much appreciated
removed all the belts, and the viscous fan hoping the noise would disappear but even with everything off the noise is still there ?.
The valves [tappets] have been checked & adjusted,
The Timing belt has been replaced about 5000 Kms ago it came with all the new gears and tensioner came as a full kit,
The only thing I can think of is something has gone wrong in or behind the injector pump or the cam gear
Are there any known problems with that area that any body knows about ?
Everything else on the vehicle is fine plenty of power, starts first time, doesn't overheat, runs well,
I would like to find out what this noise is as we dont want to cause any major damage, I was in the supermarket car park the other day when a S1 discovery drove past with the same type of noise but unfortunately he drove straight out before I could talk to him,
I dont really want to have to take it to the local LRD as the credit card won't be big enough.
keeping my fingers crossed we can find the problem soon.

Was the O-ring fitted between the crank sprocket and the inner crank seal when the timing belt was replaced? Mine wasnt and I have a noise in my 300tdi which fits your description, and I suspect that this maybe the cause. Only a suspicion which hasnt be validated yet.

    Hi
Thanks for your reply, But yes it was fitted, everything was done by the book
Seems strange to me as to why you can remove all the belts and fan and the noise is still there ? failing everything thing else I will pull down the front timing cover and re check everything just in case ?
Ive also today checked the three bolts on the Injector pump gear just in case but all was very tight,
The noise does seem to be more on the cam side of the engine than any where else.
In the morning Im going to check the turbo out in case something there is beginning to let go.
    will keep you informed.. ......

Check the vac pump for noises, long screwdriver to the ear. They have been known to make clicking sounds if one of the valves come loose.

You haven't mentioned whether it is Auto or Manual as it maybe clutch throwout bearing or a bolt holding torque convertor to the flywheel coming loose, also I once come across a very loose starter motor which was making contact with the flywheel, long shots I know. Have you checked the grooves in the pulleys and belt for any crap, good luck, Regards Frank.

Also have a check all around the exhaust etc as they can make a nice jangly sound if they have a broken bracket or something just touching.

The other really jangly sound I've had turned out to be the mud shield on the transfer case front output housing. It only made a noise when moving though, and not when stationary.

    Exclamation

    Hi to all..
I checked out the turbo blades and casing today but all seems well in there, no side play on the shaft and the blades spin up freely,
The Exhaust & heat shields, [Good idea] No I didnt even think of that but I will in the morning go back out and check,As that is the same side in which the noise seems louder.
All the ideas that everybody has suggested including the vac pump are very much appreciated some I have already looked at and some will be as in in the morning
I did check the grooves in the pulleys and belt for any crap that's when I removed them all, the starter motor is one place I haven't yet looked at.
Everybody has really good logical ideas but as of this stage the noise is still very evident,
I will post more details on this problem when I find out what the heck is going on.
As stated before if all else fails I will have to either pull the timing cover back off or let a local LRD have a listen.
You can make a bet on this that its going to be something very simple and nothing to really worry about [ I do hope ]
    Thanks again.

Check the rubber mountings on the air filter casing, or the casing itself isn't tapping against something because it was put back in a different position - hold the air filter housing tightly and see if that changes the sound/stops it...
