Checking that the engine starts only in P and N would be a good guide to correct adjustment too. Move the new switch a little each way until it's correct

i just replaced the one on my `01 D2 Td5 without the LRT-44-011 tool fine.
it makes it more of a two person job to be easy but, you could do it still by yourself.
as bee_utey pointed out a good start is to see if it will start in N & P but for me that wasnt enough, as i could have it in N or P and start it still, even if the indicator on the dash didnt show that i was in N or P (just showed blank - in between gears, i imagine though if it was that far out it showed completely the wrong gear it would have stopped me starting it)
I had to adjust it (rotate it) while my partner was in the cab watching the gear shift position indicator on the dash, then tighten the nuts once in position/alignment.
So when it was in N (or any other position, though N seems was for me the spot to callibrate it too), the screen said it was that position too. And make sure if you wiggle the stick with out pushing in the lock button on your stick it doesnt make the indicator change or go out. that it only changes to the next one when its meant to during change.
Also a note if you turn it on after replacing it and get the flashing 'M' and 'S' dont worry like i did. it cleared after i started the car. the flashing is we had from time to time leading up to replacement because the inhibitor wouldn't register N.
