Another way to clean is with adsorption paper (industrial type) and wrap the element in it.

Worth asking the question, how do you have it plumbed up???

The rocker cover should be to the top spigot on the Provent near the lid and the return to the air intake should be on the bottom spigot.

Also, if you have the drain blocked, how
Much oil is built up in it? If oil is anymore than
About half way up the taper, you Need to drain it.
If you have the drain fitted and no check valve OR the check valve is installed backwards, crank pressure will come up the drain tube and straight into the air intake.

    Cheers

Yes that works too - even paper towels would be fine, however it is a much slower process to get a similar quantity of oil out - you may need to leave it quite a while - and no guarantees you will be able to draw the oil from the front of the filter (inside of the cylinder).

At equilibrium saturation (normal running after a few thousand km of use) the filter will have about 60-70g of oil in it. You can measure how much you remove by weighing the absorption paper before and after (or using the CA method and collecting the oil).

I have a spare element but am going to try cleaning in either kero or light aromatic solvent as a test. The everything technically should hold up as it's exposed to the hydrocarbon base of the oil anyway.
GP thinners wouldn't damage the body or the element frame however the bondet in te paper structure would probably start to separate and dissolve from the fibre somewhat.
I would hazard a guess and say that any solvent used for parts washers would pretty much be suitable.

    Cheers
