Mounting oversize spare wheel - Disco 2

Hi, dont know if anyone has come across the same problem but after fitting new 33" tyres to the factory 18" alloys i found that the spare wheel would no longer fit onto tailgate carrier - it no longer cleared the rear bumper. Anyway after coming to the conclusion that i would have to elongate the mounting holes to raise the carrier i went about removing it from the door, a relatively simple process of removing the inside trim ( there are nuts on the back of the bolts) and unbolting it. It was at this stage that it occurred to me the holes in the carrier are not centred and by simply turning it 180 degrees it raises the stud heights by enough to allow the wheel to now clear the bumper!!!
The only problem being that whilst the upper and lower bolt -holes line up, the centre ones do not. This can be overcome by simply drilling two new holes in the carrier and the spacers or by simply replacing the bolts with high tensile versions and only using 4 instead of 6. I chose this option myself and now have my storage space back again without the spare in the back!!!!
You will also have to either cut a recess in the carrier for the wiper to clear it or (as i did) simply remove the wiper, rotate it clockwise a couple of splines and refit.
Hopefully there are other D2 owners out there that find this useful.

Well done for working this out for yourself, but it has been a common solution for some time. I actually drilled the holes so I could retain the 6 bolts, don't forget the stresses that the weight of your spare is exerting especially on corrugated roads.

    Did the same thing too

Worked it all out only to join here 2 weeks latter to find I didn't reinvent the wheel on this one

Now I have removed the wiper arm perminantly so cutting the holder was a waste of time, never thought about just roating it a bit
    Cheers, Kyle

    Just be careful!

All the stress is now on the single bolt (on wheel) and are known to rip it out / crack all the welds

That's why I stayed with the 6 bolts, never had a prob with the old D2 this way, for the sake of drilling 2 holes and spraying a bit of black paint (to prevent rust) I thought it'd be better.

    Not those 6

The 3 stud that hold the wheel on.

I often think that the Defender wheel carrier is fitted upside down for that very reason as it has one stud above the other two.

I don't own a Defender so has anyone tried to turn the carrier around the 'right' way? (Not that I've ever seen a stud fail on a Defender anyway)

The D1 has more clearance between the bumper for the spare wheel than the D2.

A 32 will just fit as standard with no mods, so your 31 should cause no problems.

Keep an eye on the holder anyhow. The one on our Defender cracked badly on the 2 lower bolts attaching the carrier to the vehicle, as per pic below. This is a similar carrier to that on the D2 Disco.
