300TDi water pump failure after 4 months

    Hi all

I replaced the water pump on my 1998 Defender in September last year while doing a timing belt.

The new water pump was a genuine water pump.

Lately I have been smelling coolant and noticing that the serpentine belt has been squeeking on start up. I popped the bonnet today and removed the pulley from the water pump. With a mirror I could see that coolant has been leaking out of the hole under the shaft.

Am I just unlucky to get a dud water pump? It's only done about 2,000kms.

Not happy..but I have to thank British Offroad for adhering to their warranty conditions and replacing the pump for free.

    Cheers

every product has duds in the range. Mine was going strong until i flushed the coolant, no leaks at all. Flush the coolant drive 25km and its ****ing coolant everywhere. Maintenance is supposed to be a good thing.

When you buy a new one, take a steel ruler and check the back for warping. I fitted a new one along with a new metal P gasget prior to doing the Anne Beadell. Used new bolts and putback together as instructed by the book, however the pressuer applyed to the out of shape pump body cracked it. We drove to Port Agusta through that wild storm and did not notice the leak with all the extra water . Luckily the low coolant alarm whent off as we pulled up out side our accom. Got up early and replaced it with the the old one, nothing like a landy with its bonnet up prior a big trip.
    Buyer beware !.
