replacing plastic tubing in D2 Td5 coolant system

seems like a crazy design to me having brittle plastic tubing in the system - anyone replaced these with flexible rubber or other tubing?

yep thats my field fix, replace it with 3/8th heater hose.

HOWEVER. That doesnt last forever as if you follow the normal routing it will rub through on the shroud and the side of the radiator if your lucky it'll rub through the radiator if you're not.

I havent had a problem with the plastic hoses on the TD5 on vehicles where they have been replaced along with the normal cooling system hoses at the appropriate intervals.

LR didnt have a replacement in stock when mine broke and the 3/8 heater hose was OUT OF STOCK at Supecrap and Ripco. But I did have some 3/8 Hydraulic line and a tube bender. So mine is now steel and runs the same path and shape as the original. I had a 40cm length of rubber hose so that made the connection to the radiator and the rest gives me the flex to lift the header tank up from the other side.

It took an hour or so to make and I wouldnt do it iagain if I had ready access to a replacement. But it is real strong and wont ever fail again.

    Cheers

    Spot on Dave

The tubing costs very little to get a replacement one.

But, like everything that ages, the pipes get brittle over time.
    Just get a new one!

Also, as time goes on, your coolant bottle & washer bottle will get brittle also. I can just push my finger through the washer bottle now

Replacement every 7-10 years is a good safe investment...
Especially as these are closed systems and not just overflow tanks for the cooling anymore..

I do the cooling system overhaul at 5yr/100K interval and replace the pump and radiator at 10/200K This assumes that your running the correct concentration of the OAT coolant.

at the 5 year mark its about $1k for the total engine service parts being all cooling system hoses, fluids and filters, rocker gasket, belt and idlers for a non ACE td5.

I've got no real life experience on it if you're running ethyl glycol in a td5 but if you follow the manufacturers reccomendation from some earlier vehicles that run ethy-glycol then you do it every 2 years or 50K Km

for the 10 year mark then its about $2k in parts which gets you the 5 year parts plus a water pump, PAS pump (if needed) and a replacement radiator IF you were as cautious as I am you'd probably spring and additional $500 to get the head gasket head bolts and drop the sump to redo the oil pump bolt and do a proper bottom end inspection and flush out of the pan while adding pickup magnets to the drain bolt of the sump. (this assumes that you have already done the oil pump bolt at a previous point)
