Exclamation Got gremlins in my Disco - How unusual!

While driving around today, in the heat, i had the wonderfully cold AC pumping nice cool air throughout the truck, everything was beaut!

Until i noticed the revs start fluctuating as much as 200 - 300rpm!
At the same time, there was an intermittent clicking from under the dash.
Hairs started standing up on the back of my neck, hair sprouted from my knuckles and fangs grew!

At a guess, I turned the AC off, the issues stopped, turned it back on, the gremlin worked its way back, but would disappear for a time but did re-surface again, and so the cycle continued ...

Im assuming its related to an AC relay somehow, maybe the switch, the compressor!?? Could have absolutely nothing to do with the AC at all!? But it coinsidental that while the AC was off, there was no fluctuation or clicking ...

I'm far from an expert on auto electrics! so I thought i'd see if anyone else may have had something like this happen and or know what might be going on?

    thats normal..

the clicking is the drive relay for the AC pump and the revs change is the drag on the engine from the pump engaging.

AC pumps draw from between 3 and 12HP (although my best guestimation for a landy is 3-5)

Normal for the revs to jump up and down as much as 300rpm while driving?

I know running the AC taxes what little of the very precious horsepower the Tdi has and that the revs do drop considerably, but this issue is more a constant fluctuation of revs while driving ... It seems like the AC is constantly engaging and dis-engaging, hence the clicking under the dash, which originally got me to thinking of a relay?

Could it be a faulty relay that may be causing the clicking causing the truck to surge while driving?

Come to think of it, I have noticed in the last couple days, from cold start up, there is a squeaky noise coming from the AC pulley (more freakin squealling noises! GRRR)
I also had to replace a bolt that holds the whole clutch mech to the compressor, I used what ever fit and tightend it to where I thought it ought to be.
So hopefully there isnt any correlation between the surging and those issues!??

Check your condenser fan is running and the condenser is free from junk. You may be overpressurising the system and it is tripping the hi-lo switch.

I would run the a/c and stand by the open bonnet, fast idle, and observe the compressor clutch is cycling without slipping.

assuming its an auto yes 2-300 rpm drops on light throttle applications on over run/coasting are normal.

in a manual not so much as there is a permanent mechanical connection from the wheels to the crank but you can notice the additional retardation, I've been known to wind the aircon on flat out to aid engine braking down hills.

I'll give that a look see tomorrow, I hadn't bothered to do any further investigation prior to posting.

Im going to take the truck for a run again tomorrow, will try and get video of the shinanigans and get it online.
The drops in rpm after switching on the rpm is spot on, along with almost headbutting the windscreen with the loss of power! LOL
Its the surging or better yet hunting of the rpm thats got me frazzled ... anyway i'll get something online.
