    300tdi Alternator Advice need

Looks like the alternator on the trusty Defender is dead its not charging and drawing .25 amp with the motor off. Faulty diode was one suggestion, personally I loathe 12v electrics

Do I need to replace it or is there another option, keeping in mind I live in FNQ between Cairns an Townsville.

If I need to replace it where is the best source and what sort of money should I be spending.

    Any suggestions much appreciated
    Cheers

    Replacement probably the simplest....

I had to replace one in a hurry in the 300tdi D1.

I got it from WR Automotive mrautomotive - Home as recommended by users on this site

I was a long way from home, but the service was prompt & at a reasonable price (cheapest in Qld at the time - mid last year - abt $350 I seem to remember - add transport cost)

if you have time to wait

    Hi
I recently brought two alternators for my 300TDi's from the UK, off fleebay.
Price to my door for the two, was less than the price for one locally.
As much as I like to support local business, number one does come first.

    Cheers Arthur

Typically, when the diodes fail the volts jump when motor running, lights get bright etc etc. I'd call on an auto electrician first, and if they say it is stuffed, then proceed with replacement, Diodes are available as a part, so maybe just remove, disassemble to get out the old diode pack, replace, and refit.

    Gonetroppo,
not sure if it actually helps but i will be down in cairns next weekend, I have a fender 65A alternator you can use to get you buy / work out a deal on.

I guess by the time you got to Cairns you may as well just get a new one or upgrade to a disco 100A jobbie but either way PM if you want.
