No probs :D Yep, was clutch - the little tin can on the firewall.

That's what I ended up thinking too - from my little knowledge of all things mechanical, after being pointed in the right direction by PhilipA & Wagoo. Prior to that, I had thoughts of the gearbo & clutch being pulled apart, etc!

I had a look but couldn't see any leaks from the master cylinder OR the slave cylinder though. Maybe it's just a blockage in the pipe - who know when the oil was changed last!

The clutch hose on mine went soft and disintegrated internally did all sorts of strange things but it was a simple fix

I think if I get a chance on the weekend, I'll pull the hoses and check them over/ blow them out and test. Although the pipe between each cylinder is metal. I haven't been able to get under the car for a proper look yet but where do the non-metal pipes run?

~$100 for master (Lockheed) and slave cylinders landed from the UK, which I think is a good price, so I'll get replacements anyway. After 30 years, I think they've lasted a while!

The flexible hose runs from the firewall to the slave cylinder. It is possible for them to collapse internally, but this usually causes a very hard pedal and non or slow raising of the pedal after use.

BTW they are a B to bleed as the hose runs uphill across the back of the motor so you need a pressure bleeder or what I did in a pinch was jack the RH side of the car up, and bend the hose up temporarily with the master attached to bleed.AFAIR I had to undo a couple of retainers for the pipe but it was 20 years or so ago.

Ah, then that's where I have a metal tube (look like brake pipe) rather than a flexible one so bleeding it will be even more of a pain...... :(
Obviously someone's replaced it at some point in time. Although it was an auto in a previous life...

Might just buy the stuff and get the mech to install.... might cost a bit more but at least it "should" be done properly - although, I'm loath to drive to too far at the moment...

...... and then it clicked! The fittings could be anything - imperial or metric because the vehicle started off life (in Oz) as an auto. So I'll need to find a way to check either way.

What's the best oil I should be using for the clutch fluid?

If I get a bit of time this weekend, I'll make a start on replacing the master & slave cylinders.
