My Stage 1 broke down today

Any suggestions on what might cause the engine to surge and cut out and then die?

Felt like the fuel pump was buggered and fuel was not getting to the carby, but then could hear it ticking over still.

I drove about 15 k's this afternoon, and it was dieing and then surging again, but then came good, but on the way Home it started again and then pretty much died.

I can turn it over, but it wont idle and doesnt want to run.

Could it be the carbys need to be cleaned? - or could it be the alternator?

The Charge light does come on when it idles sometimes - and looks like it is the original.

    Thanks

    Sam

Sam take the fuel pipe off the carby and see if there is fuel coming out of the line with the ignition turned on (careful though)
check the fuel filter it was originally on the firewall behind the original air filter
You can take a spanner and take the bottom off of the fuel pump there is a filter in there that could be blocked also
If the engine turns over its unlikely to be the alternator the stage 1 electrics are really simple

It could be something as simple as a loose wire on the coil. I had this happen on my V8 County and it really felt like fuel surge. I always look for an easy fix first and then delve deeper.

I had a very similar problem with mine. Very similar to a fuel fault, would die and splutter with no power idle ok then run fine for a bit and die. I’d recently replaced all the ignition stuff like points and condenser as well as the coil and leads so, I changed the fuel pump, filters, drained the fuel cleaned the carburettors and took it for a drive confident my woes were behind me. About 5 ks down the road it just totally died. There was only one thing, it defied logic but the new condenser was crap, I had a spare new one under the seat, fitted it and powered on trouble free for about 2000ks, then it failed to. Turns out the Bosch one is absolute crud, even though it’s listed as the correct replacement, don’t accept it!! Get the Champion one thats also listed, it’s larger, and has a soldered end that is quite distinctive, it’s also more common as it’s the same one used in Holden and ford V8’s. After fitting that I have had no problems at all. I’m now fitting a Bosch Scorcher dizzy to fix random timing problems when I get back. Give it a whirl, condensers are cheap enough.
