I reckon I might have missed something really obvious re 318's and 727's.........
The rover TF727 is not the chrysler big block TF727. It appears the rangie item is the same one used in International Scouts in the US and virtually nowhere else.
if you do a search of rangies on ebay there is on in south aus running an oldsmobile v8 so that kit must be out there somewhere.
Hi Tony,
I have a charger and played with some chrysler engines. If you are going to a chrysler engine, don't play with the 318 or 340. I reckon you will be disappointed with the standard power they produce. I suggest a 360 with a stroker crank 4.00" stroke, 408 cubic inch. I have done this combo in my charger and has heaps of torque. A rangie with larger tyres, jacked up, needs torque to get it going especially going into a head wind and up a hill. Currently I have a 383 chev supercharged, turbo 700 to lt230 transfer which i am happy with now. I am also friends with rovercare maybe we can catch up for a yarn.
Regards Paul.
Cheers Paul,
I couldn't bring myself to use a 340 in a RR anyway to be honest unless it upsets the E55 guys and I guess a stroked 360 would make it boogie along nicely.
I just figured the teen's would be plentiful, can be stroked cheaply and parts everywhere but the 360's are the same i guess.
A sit down would be great BTW and help me get my ducks in a row to sort this machine and get it good for another 10 years.
Im in Morwell and thereabouts fairly regularly so when you have time let me know and we can catch up.
PM with phone number on its way.
Cheers,
Tony
Very interesting!
id have thought they would have used the big block torqueflite with the Inters as they ran 345 cubic inch engines similar to the Acco's and having owned a few petrol Acco's id remember the 345's looking like a big block casting.
All I can say about the 727 in mine is that its taken a hell of a pounding towing and still shifts smooth as a babies bum and has never overheated and spat out trans fluid unlike other tow vehicles Ive owned.
Sadly Tech info on them seems to be scarce in the print and Rave manuals.
thanks,
Tony
I don't know what the big petrol scouts used, I only really know about the SD33 nissan powered ones.
I had a rangie TF727 a few years ago (I bought it cheap for the attached 1.003:1 LT230) and I couldn't even give it away.
I had a lot of bites from people hearing TF727 but when they started questions to identify the box all the wrong answers came back. I got about $20 for it as scrap in the end.
I'm sure it's still a good and strong box, but IMO three speeds isn't enough for a tractor, let alone a road going vehicle.
The 727 was designed to suit engines with at least 6 litre capacity . its parasitics are in the 40 -50 HP range . the 84-85 rangie with the 727 was no doubt the slowest ,worse performing ,juice chewing , gutless rangie ever released !! Poor thing only had a 140 hp and 50 of that went into Parasitics !!! You may as well fit a Glide , only 2 speeds but stuff all parasitics !! Even though Ima Holden V8 man , the best , neatest most sensible conversion are usually using a Ford windsor (Never a Clevo!) with a up front dizzy and 60 degree V , Set of CHI alloy heads , very nice.
PS there is absolutely no way any Rover V8 could give a 727 a pounding !!!
The parasitic value being high explains a bit, I even thought that the torque converter was leaky for a while and had it tested to make sure that the vanes were all still intact which they were, I also thought about a stall kit so she would get up in the rev range a tad before launch but it didn't seem to be a worthwhile upgrade at the time as I wasnt 100% sure it would improve anything.
So to cope with the sluggish acceleration I've just "Rowed" her around manually keeping her in 2nd as when she revved high it wasn't too bad and Ive found the 3.5 to be a nice high rev V8 even if it lacked torque.
For me the requirement is More torque down low, HD trans and comfort.
As long as it sits comfy on 110 Kph im happy and im not into over taking with trailers.
Fuel economy isn't an issue and she will run on Petrol because I think LPG is these days a marginal saving with more hassle and anything but a dedicate LPG system is a compromise. (Been there many times and given up as I now pay .72 cents a litre LPG and you cant carry jerry cans to fuel up if you run low)
As well as loving Land Rovers im a Valiant guy and I own 3 and have owned 15 others since the early 80's including a few big block/727 combo's so I can see what you mean about the box.
As for 3 speeds not being enough?
Im not hugely fussed if the thing revs at 3000/3200 rpm at highway speeds as in its current form she regularly ran at 4 grand hauling up long hills in 2nd and apart from being a fairly sweet sound when they work hard she seemed to actually run better for a day or so after a hard workout.
As I mentioned to Paul today the 3.5 currently in her has 3 slugs not even making 80PSI comp so they are effectively out to lunch and just along for the ride and the remaining cylinders struggle between 90 and 110 PSI so she is a sick lil puppy and yet until I bogger her last year was still hauling 1 1/2 ton of sand around and towing 3 and 4 ton of stock crate around although she makes bugger all vacuum these days so the brakes are really touch and go hence being left to farm duty until she gets a heart transplant.
Im going to pull her down when she comes out because id really like to see the state of the engine and how bad she really is now because im amazed she starts and runs still, doesnt blow clouds of smoke and the only nasty she does is spit oil all over the bottom and coats the back with oil spots as well. (No chassis rust lol)
