Gday Andrew
Firstly thanks for replying, i appreciate it. Sorry for the slow response, replacing the alternator bearings opened a whole other can of worms...& was delightfully 'left' of the solution
There is no real play in my tensioner bearing & it spins freely but it does sound a little 'sandy'... I shall follow your lead & replace the Tensioner, the water pump & the belt.
Thanks again for the help.
Dom
The problem isn't the tensioner pulley bearing, it's the nylon guide and spring that the whole assembly hinges on.
If you get wear in the nylon bush it may either not allow the spring to provide even tension (stick and be too tight, and then slip) or it can cant forward and cause the tension to be uneven across the belt, which is what Pat is talking about.
Ok, yeah that makes sense. I shall replace that whole tensioner mechanism, thanks Rick.
Cheers

Shiny new Dayco tensioner & Quinton Hazel pump installed & now its my turn to cross fingers.
Thanks gents.

Let us know how it goes. Pat
Will do, thanks Pat. Hopefully get some miles on her over the weekend. :)
I put a verneer on the old tensioner & found it was 1mm smaller on the side with the spring protruding, than the other (as you said it would be). I wasnt able to measure the amount of force the 2 tensioners put on the belt but the new one certainly felt smoother. Unecessary i know, but i thought it would be interesting
Have a great week

Two cheap eBay water pumps failed their bearings in quick succession on one of our 300TDi Discovery's also destroying two belts. Now running a good quality?? waterpump made in Spain, a new QH belt and so far no squeaking belt or waterpump leaks.
I bet there was a crook batch of bearings in those pumps, with ours the cage was nylon and melted oozing out the front of the pump.
That must mean that there was a lack of lubricant in the bearing in the first place.
All of my vehicles had their water pumps replaced at the 200,00 Klm interval due to noisy bearings, but only that Discovery had its pump fail afterwards twice.
The Defender idler was replaced again after the first replacement idler was measured to be out of alignment causing the belt to squeal, that same belt is good now.

Hi Arthur
Good to know i am in good company :D. Yeah the first pump was a genuine LR made in spain & the second (& now 3rd) QH from UK. So when 2 different makes present the same symptom I had to find the cause. So hopefully i am on track now.
200ks & holding captain.
touch wood, fingers crossed & holding thumbs.
cheers
