    Hi Dom

Very overcast here in Tasmania today, but it was dry enough to do a few hours on the Rideon mower till lunch then it poured down.

I must have dozed off for a while ( Poppy Nap ) but the grass was too wet to continue, so I laboured away at the keyboard for while- xxxx long while, I'm not one of them speed typist I will tell you.

Looking forward to see what you find, just watch out for your fingers playing with the belt.

    Alrighty here goes Arthur,

Measuring off a straight edge from the front edge of the harmonic balancer to the face of the water pump hub (face that the pulley bolts to) is 3mm. If i measure from the Harmonic balancer to the first ridge of the water pump pulley it is 9mm. Measuring the harmonic balancer itself i get 8.5mm from the ridge to its front face... so in effect the first ridge on the waterpump is only .5 of a mm behind the hamonic balancer.

I also measured from the front face of the harmonic balancer to the PAS hub (18.5mm) & to the first ride of the alternator pulley (10mm). The front face of the harmonic balancer & the front face of the PAS pulley were just about dead even.

The harmonic balancer does wonder about 1mm as it rotates though & these were worst case scenarios.

I did find the bearing pulley behind the viscouse fan had a pretty nasty wobble of at least 1mm as it rotates & sounds worse for wear. The little AC pulleys were also sounding pretty sandy.

Applying water to pulleys didnt do anything. Is it supposed to make it squeal more or stop?

I took some pics & video for sound... got to love the iPhone. Taking there sweet time down loading i'll attach them to another post.

I look forward to your view on my findings. Although i am leaning toward the crook bearing behind the fan. Oh i also put the original expansion bottle cap back on... as it only appears to drip when it cools off... cant hurt to try.

mmm yeah i was supposed to be cutting grass, not my favourite pass time.

    Cheers

Dom, the bearing in the timing cover is a pain as technically you need to replace the entire cover and it's $$$$$

The problem is that SKF refuse to sell the bearing assy on the aftermarket.

Some have successfully used a Ford water pump bearing and made it work.
A bit of fiddling but it can save you a heap of money.

I'll try and dig up the appropriate thread/s.

    Fan hub bearing

Thanks Wally for that link and thanks also to Roverrescue for putting that thread together.
I have also added to that thread my thoughts on how to go about replacing the bearing.

So Rick it has obviously not been as simple as cleaning the block face and then using a good (blue?) sealant both sides of the "P" gasket ?

    (has worked for me)

One of my housings had corroded to the point that a PO had used some epoxy to fill in the gaps.

I took the housing to a mate who has a milling machine and He lightly resurfaced that back mounting face that is where the 'P' gasket sits, so it is now free of any marks and parallel to the front face where the water pump is.

However in doing this, it does alter the measurements inrespect to the Harmonic balancer and moves the waterpump, idler and steering pump towards the engine block, so only take the barest minimum cut to clean that surface up.

This housing is the one fitted onto 'Fred' and is now working fine without any leaks.

    Nope.

I've tried spray Hylomar, Loctite 518, which I tend to use on any flange/assembly these days, whatever Loctite's blue RTV silicon is called, and Aviation gasket goo.

The only other thing it could be is the front welch plug, but that's new too and was installed with Stag, so I'm buggered if I know.

Prior to fitting the metal gasket it had the composite one and no leak, which makes it even more frustrating......

    Hi Arthur

Pity that your harmonic balancer cant be adjusted fore & aft. Would certainly solve a problem or 2.

I have attached a pic showing my belt on all its pulleys. The PAS pump seems rather far forward but the belt isnt riding up. Certainly would be the easiest cheapest thing to change.

But the timing cover bearing certainly doesnt sound happy & does wobble.. although at this point i am pretty tapped out.

I will definately take a look at the link posted.

    Cheers guys

I hear you, prior to my 3 pumps failing the original one worked fine I changed it looking for a mystery leak which turned out to be the head gasket but no-one could say for sure, and i didnt want to have the head done unnecessarily.

    Happy days
