Question 300tdi oil lamp on at under 1k rpm

    Hiya folks,

Currently on a trip, stopped overnight in Dalby, Qld.

On the way up a strange thing started happening - my oil light started coming on when the engine was under 1000rpm's...

Any idea's what may be causing this?

    300tdi Defender...

Just screw the idle up to the light just goes out . When you get back from your trip then fit a descent capillary oil guage and see wgats going on , there could be 101 different reasons .
Does this only happen when the engine is warmed up ?

    Ditto.

Not much you can do while on a trip.

BTW, what year and VIN is the Tdi ?

One simple thing you can do while on a trip is fit a new oil pressure switch. They are pretty cheap.

That is probably the cheapest, simplest and most common cause of the oil light coming on.

I actually put a gauge on mine years ago (prefer that to a clock) and then noticed it was slow to get pressure after sitting for a week or more. Also when hot pressure is noticeably lower (Penrite 15w50 semi synth). Last time I did the timing belt I gave her a new pump rotor set and pressure relief slug and spring. The slow oil thing was caused by a score in the pump housing (back of timing case) which I fixed with metal poxy. When is it due for a timing belt?

Yep, I installed a real pressure gauge when my light started to flicker but I won't report what I found or what the fix was until Grizzly has finished his trip

Perhaps he should take an oil sample have it analysed , and see how much copper , white metal is in it , maybe the Fe ppm as well .

Well the thing is I don't actually have a timing belt - I have the Zeus gears fitted and they've been there for over 100'000km's.

I guess I'll add the oil pressure gauge into the list as the light tells me nothing ...

As fOr the question before about vin - I'll answer that when I get home
but she was built in July '94 (she was one of the first of the 300tdi's)

With any luck I'll be home in a few hours - just about to leave Toowoomba now...
