AC condenser fan relays - location on 85 RRC

The condenser fans don't run when the AC is on, and the drawings I have show that there are 2 relays -1 for each fan. Despite my best efforts, I have been unable to locate them to check the coil supply to them, which comes from another relay I think.

The manual shows that on an 86, the relays are behind the passenger footwell kick panel, but show nothing for an 85. They aren't there by the way, and they aren't with the pile of other relays under the panel below the steering wheel.

    Any other ideas?

    Cheers - Gav.

Have you checked that the fans are ok by running a wire from the battery to the fan or checking for power at the fan, and if there is power that the negative is earthed?

When I purchased my Disco both fans weren't working. As it was both fans the last thing I suspected was the fans, and as the wiring plug was mounted between the radiator and condenser was very hard to access.

So I went searching else where with the relay/s being the first point of call(after checking fuses)

It turned out that both fans were stuffed.

    Dave.

Haven't actually run a wire to test the fans, but I have checked to see if there is power there - with the engine running and the AC on, there is no voltage on either positive wire. The earths are fine.

I might just go and check the fans now though, to make sure I haven't got more problems than I first thought.

    G`day ,

the fans switch earth , in the front top of the inlet manifold there is a single wire switch .

If your fans etc are work earthing this wire , should make the fans come on , don`t have to do anything else just earth , ign on off whatever , works alone .

Under the bonnet on the pass/left side upper fire wall , there is an oval plate , remove and on the back are , i think 4 relays .

There are 2 twin fan wiring diagrams , the relay your wanting should be RB , UR , YO , B colours the change over relay should be WY , PN , UB , NP , and earth which is most likely B .

    This is for 85 BA

Thanks for that - I would never have looked behind that plate - what a dumb spot for relays to hide! Now I have another job to do on the wiring - move all those relays to somewhere more convienient.

There is no switch on the engine - a bit more research shows that is for the Auto only.

I found the problem - the relay had been replaced at some stage, and when the new relay was pushed in, it pushed one of the wires out of the holder. I have changed how it operates now, and have the condenser fans come on when the AC fan is switched on to any speed - regardless of if the compressor is running or not. This way, it gives me a simple way to add some extra airflow should the need arise.

    Thanks for everyones help.
