Thread: Tool Box

I have found toolboxes (with Drawers) absolutely useless, the draws tend to collapse under the weight of the tools, I haven't yet found a tool box that is warranted for off road use or even on road use, workshop only.
I have a sliding plastic bin with lid and wheels(from K-mart) with a sheet of heavy duty gal. iron in the bottom, most of my tools are in cloth/canvas rolls and socket sets in their original tin boxes with foam padding. You can make your own rolls if your missus has a sewing machine, Regards Frank.

So any suggestions on where I might get a good quality basic automotive tool kit in its own carry case? As I said I can put something together but like the idea of a purpose designed unit.

I have an SP 'Mobile Solutions ' case with a good assortment of sockets spanners and pliers etc. The case is blow moulded ( sorry I cannot recall the number of the kit - try SP51205 ) and about the size of a phone book. It sits under the rear seat of the D4 quite neatly. SP tools are reasonable quality, and most of the specialist tool places sell them.

I have a seperate set of tools for the car.

Stanley and Kingcrome do good combinations at a reasonable price that are good quality.

I have in my drawers;

Stanley socket set

Stanley screwdriver set

Kingcrome Torx set

12V impact driver + sockets + D2 wheel nut socket

Viscous fan spanner

A tool bag with all the odd spaners, pliers, shifters and stuff + LR specific tools.

The rest of the space in the drawers is taken up with spare hoses, and D2 specific parts.

The second drawer has recovery gear, battery jumper pack, tyre repair gear, work light nuts, bolts screws, cable ties , filters, coolent and so on.


All this stays in the car permanently.

I have probably missed some items, but I think you get the idea.

Add inside and outside circlip pliers, you can usually get by without them, but they certainly make the job easier. Think uni replacement, wheel bearings, etc.

Thanks - unfortunately while they make a Dirt Bike Tool Kit they do not make anything specifically as a car tool kit.

However this does come close - albiet a bit expensive. Most of the cheapies I have seen also have basic electrical tools, alen keys etc as well

By no means do I think this is complete, but its a starting point.

Personally, I have a tool box in the workshop, and a tool kit for travel. Every time I do work on the car, I try and use the travel kit in the first instance. The travel kit is pretty much the D2 specialty tools (hub spanners etc), plus what I need. If i need to get something from the work shop, I put one of those on the list for the travel kit. Of course, the workshop tool kit sometimes has better, more efficient, electrical, or just bloody bigger tools that do the same job, and I do use those. But I make sure I have the light hand tool to do the job in my travel kit.

I have a Repco set much like the Kincrome one above, 3/8 and 1/4 drive in metric and imperial, ring-open ended in metric, four screwdrivers, loose hex key set in metric and imperial, wire cutters. Good general set, but still lots of gaps.

Someone posted a while back about filling the base of vacuum plastic tool holders with spray foam to make them last longer. Sounded like a great idea. You could locate a place with a vacuum moulder and make up your own tool box just for you. Or diy with spray foam and glad wrap and carve away the bits you don't want.
