D2 AC Blower overhaul WITHOUT removing dash

    Hi guys,

My recently bought D2 blows a puff of dirt every time i start the AC so i thought i should take apart the whole blower, ducts and give it a good clean. As you know the Discovery 2 doesn't have a cabin filter. All that's preventing you from breathing in dirt in the cabin is a small strip of sponge above the bulkhead....really lame for Land Rover if you ask me!

I checked the Haynes manual and it involves removing the dash...But i figured out a way to remove the whole blower assembly without having to. This may be good to do after an epic trip in the outback...or if your blower looks anything like mine!!!

1 - Step 1 - remove the Glovebox. There's total 4 screws on the hinge. Remove the flimsy cardbox cover that's above the passenger footwell. Carefull...this cover is easily damaged! You can now see the whole blower assembly

2 - Step 2 - There's a total of 4 bolts that holds the blower onto flimsy brackets on the dash assembly. remove the 2 top bolts.

    http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...ntingbolts.jpg

    3 - Step 3 - And the 2 lower ones

    http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...ntingbolts.jpg

4 - Step 4 - Now the blower should be able to drop down and rest on the the cross member that holds the glovebox. This is the only part that's preventing you from removing the blower completely. Now you need more a bit more clearance before you can get the blower out completely. Remove all the wiring connectors, making sure you remember their location, a good idea is to tape and label the connectors so you can easily re-connect them later. Remove the Glovebox limit switch (the switch that lights up the glovebox when its open).

    http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...Connector1.jpg

    http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...imitswitch.jpg

5 - Step 5 - Gently bent out the upper mounting brackets...and inch should be enough

    http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...ntsupwards.jpg

6 - Step 6 - Now here is the KEY!.... There's 2 screws you can see on the front of the blower that holds the 2 halves of the blower together. With a short screwdriver, you should be able to undo this 2 screws

    http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...coverscrew.jpg

7 - Step - With the 2 screws out, you can now split the blower and manouver it to clear the dash cross member.

8 - Heres the blower out

Now with the blower completely out you can slowly take it apart and give it a good clean. Look at how much dirt is INSIDE my blower!!!...and to think that i would have been breathing in all this crap....!

Assembly is in reverse order...easy enough! Have Fun!

The RAVE CD tells you how to do it without removing the dash..

Its basically the same way as you have pointed out.

If you remove the glovebox you can get a vaccum cleaner nossle down the top.The blower alsao gets alot of stuff fall out of the glovebox and into the blower fan as well..

    Cheers Ean

I had read Ean's thread on it but bookmarked yours (this one) so that I could refer to it as it was so well laid out. Thanks for the effort.
