    D2 key fob

Is it the key that's gets programmed with the codes or the key reader?
Just want to settle a discussion this side.
    Cheers

    Can be both.
The car has a reader that can detect key or fob or both. You can program the car so the alarm goes off if you use the key and not the fob if you wish... I had a D2 and had to get it set so I could use the key and / or fob to unlock the door without the alarm going off...
Then the key is programmed to the reader.

You program the computer to accept the code of the key. I had to get a new key (off ebay and UK for the right frequency) and used used the nanocom to program the computer to accept the code it was receiving from the key.

I am not aware you can change the code of the key.

    +1

The code in the key is uniquely encoded into the chip hardware inside the key fob.

The BCU / ECU (can't remember which) gets programmed to accept particular key serial numbers.

There are two types of RF sensors used. Two (?) receivers, one on each side of the body listen for an open / lock signal. Then there is a third sensor wrapped around the ignition lock that talks to the key and will not let the engine start if the key has an invalid serial number (wrong key) or if it has no serial number (flat fob battery)
