    Question How tight?

    Hi, does anybody have any advice?
    How tight should the nut be on the front of the layshaft in a series 2A gear box? I have the motor out of the vehicle and have the clutch throwout assembly off the front of the gearbox. I have noticed that the nut on the front of the layshaft is loose. It does still have a split pin in it to prevent it from coming right off. Is this correct or should it be done up tight?

    G,day mick my book tells me it should be tightend to 75 lb f ft or 10.0 kg fm hope this helps.

    I have two manuals here and neither of them tell me if it should be tight and if so, at what tension.
    May I ask what manual you have?

    do it up till it breaks then back it off half a turn for thread relief?

    if that nut is loose then you've had some wear, you can tighten it up again but a rebuild due to layshaft bearing/shimming is on the way..

    I would tighten it up till it contacts then a little more just to line up the split pin.

    If it gets ridiculously tight back it off and start again but you'll probably wind up at the same point.

    Its a Haynes LAND-ROVER SERIES 11, 11a& 111 1958 to 1978 .2286cc 4cyl, petrol.88 & 109 in wheelbase.

    This probably explains - it also covers Series 3. At the time the Series 2/2a factory manual was compiled, very few owners (and remember the Series 2/2a was usually maintained and repaired by owners) had torque wrenches, so there was no point in specifying torques except where absolutely essential; I think almost the only specified torque in the book is the cylinder head bolts.

    By the time the Series 3 was being introduced, professional maintenance and repair was becoming more usual, and furthermore, it was becoming standard for torques to be specified for most bolts and nuts in all parts, at least for new designs. And presumably was already a standard of the Leyland organisation, and so was applied to the Series 3 manual, even though it was not really a new design.

    Thanks for all you help guys.
    This site is fabulous, you can walk in from the shed pondering over a problem and have it solved with good advice on here in no time at all.
    I will have to get myself a Haynes Manual.
    The ones I have are an Autobooks (old) that covers Series 1 & 2 and a Brooklands that covers 2, 2A & 3, but it seems to lack a bit in content.
