check the oil level and try forcing it to take off in first if thats ok.
If with the correct oil level you can routinely take off correctly in first and then shift it up manually you have a problem in the box and it needs to come out for overhaul.
Another auto intermitent fault that is occuring.
It is an 02 Disco TD5 with 250K on the clock.
Ocassionally when you select D or R the vehicle will not go, just revs., as if you are in Neutral. Sometimes if you select 3 or 2 or 1 it will go, other times you select R first and it works.
Sometimes I will switch the engine off, wait a minute and restart and it will select gear and go. Sometimes I just wait a few minutes and it will work. This occurs when the vehicle is cold, and when warm. All the gear selector lights work correctly on the dash, and on the console. I do not get the M&S flashing lights which makes me think it is not the inhibitor switch.
Once it decides to work it shifts properly at speed and appears to be working / operating correctly.
I have tried to fiddle with the selector adjustment at the transmission end but does not seem to be much room for adjustment. Is there an adjustment point at the console end?
I will check underneath tonight and see if the wiring loom to the transmission is okay. Any ohter suggestions?

Sounds like low oil level to me too
Have look at your cooler pipes near the radiator end for signs of leaks at the fittings.
From the Ashcroft FAQs on 4HP22E.
I can pull off in position 1 on the shifter and reverse is OK but in 'D' it will either not pull away or will pull off in 3rd gear
One of the one way clutches has failed which causes the loss of drive in D, it will sometimes pull off in 3rd as the ECU recognises a fault and puts it in 3rd which is "limp home mode", It needs a rebuild.

Checked the fluid level lastnight and it was full. The colour was off a bit, but not too bad, and smelled okay. Checked my records and is about 7K overdue for a service. Will give it a good service with filter change and see what happens.
