    Engine stops with a cough

Hello, I'm having a Defender 300TDI year 98. When I am doing 50Kms the engine starts jerking little bit with a light cough, so I change the gears to a lower gear and slow down a bit and it gets ok. This start to happen 2 months ago and also this is happening not frequently. So I change the air filter and the diesel filter and ran about 1000kms. However yesterday I had once on the freeway and today when I was heading to work it's slow down the engine and stopped and didn't start (this is the first time its stopped). It's ignition working (starter motor is good), however the engine is not picking up at all when you switch on the key. Its just cranking only.

Appreciate if anyone who knows this problem who can help me out

    Thanks

Sounds to me like you need to clean out your fuel system and check that your lift pump is working.

Fuel sedimenter probably rear pax, probably another fuel filter when done, gauze on top of lift pump - driver's side of engine, undo screw on top, gauze filter under input line on fuel injection pump.

Check lift pump by opening bleeder bolt on top of fuel filter housing and working the arm of the lift pump - underneath - until fuel comes out. Might have to turn over engine a couple of times to line up cam.

Look for crushed or broken fuel lines.

Fuel starvation problems often seem to be a combination of things.

Might pay to check the fuel solenoid on the Injection pump along with the good advice from abaddonxi, Regards Frank.
