    TD5 starter problem

    Hi guys,

Recently I've been having problems starting our Defender - I turn the key and all I get is a single click coming from the engine bay. If I try a few more times I get more single clicks before it eventually starts, although last weekend it took about 10- 15 attempts before it started. Once its started I don't have any more problems - I can turn it off and it'll start next time perfectly. It doesn't get driven through the week though, and by the next weekend I have the same problem.

I am guessing this is a starter motor problem, but is it likely to be the starter itself, or perhaps a wiring/connection problem between the battery and the starter? I'm sure a new starter isn't cheap, and I don't want to replace it if there's a cheaper/easier fix!

Given that it eventually starts OK, it's not likely to be a battery issue is it? I know my cranking battery is not 100%, as I sometimes have to jump start from the aux battery if I leave the Fender sitting idle for more than a couple of weeks.

    Cheers
    Sean

Get a auto sparky to have a look. Often the fuel reg block leaks on the starter and wrecks them though. In which case the fuel block would need repalcing as well.

These symptoms can be a few things. With what you describe it isnt usually the motor itself.
    In no particular order.
Poor connection on battery positive or negative/ both.
    Poor earth.
Starter solenoid contacts worn and or corroded.
    Starter solenoid clagged up.
I am not sure if the defender also has a starter relay.

    cheers

I had same problem a few months back. Purchased a set of starter solonoid contacts for $55. these can be fitted from underneath without removing starter, a little tricky but with good light is doable. It played up a couple of times after so I apply a small amount of lube to solonoid plunger and it has been good since.

I'd put my money on the solenoid contacts worn. Mine was doing the multiple attempt thing before it eventually started.

One of the contacts was almost worn completely through while the other and the plunger were fine.

I made up a temporary one out of a bit of copper bus bar while I waited for the new ones I got off ebay to arrive. They are sitting in the cupboard waiting for a chance to install them. The temporary one has been in for about a year now and no problems. That is the problem with temporary solutions that work, they never get fixed.

Attached photos of the worn contact and the temporary one.

Awesome, thanks for all the replies guys!

I'll see if I can have a look at the solenoid contacts this weekend - assuming I can find them, this is all a bit new to me. But I have RAVE if I get stuck.

    Cheers

I'd go the solenoid contacts too. That's what mine was. Seen them on Ebay but a good auto electrician will have em too if you take them out and run them in to the shop to match them.

Top bolt on the starter motor flange is a 15mm from memory; hard to find an angle to see it, but you can reach up from below and feel it. You'll need a 12"-ish extension and maybe a uni joint for the socket set, arms like tentacles and a good stock of swear words to get it off the first time from under the car, reaching up around the motor!

15mm short socket on a 6" x3/8 drive wobble bar will have the little bugger off in seconds, once you make contact. Easier from below from memory but doable from above once you have a mental picture of where the nut it, cause you can't see it...

I spent a couple of hours trying to get mine off until I saw somebody else's post here about the wobble bar. Forgotten who the poster was but apparently they were doing a couple a week (?).
