glow plugs possibly?
Hi All,
I've done some searching but thought I would post up a thread.
Not my car by the way.
2003 d2a td5 - chipped
214k km
In the last couple of days, when starting from cold, it had produced a lot of greyish smoke for the first few minutes of running.
It doesnt do it when started warm, and once the smoke has stopped it is fine.
It has just been serviced, all filters / oils (a couple of weeks ago by me)
There are no fault codes logged
The ECU and red plug are oil free.
I will try and have a look at it this week again but wanted to have a complete list of stuff to check.
So far on my mind are:
1. Stuck EGR
2. Injector seals or maybe a faulty injector letting fuel leak into the cylinders over a longer period of time
3. faulty MAF sensor? - (havent tried with it unplugged yet)
What else would people check?
It runs perfectly other than the smoke on cold start up. No water usage etc.
Cheers.
glow plugs possibly?
Got one similar here Pete, No EGR fitted, injector seals and washers and head gasket are recently done, no oil in harness, only thing I haven't done yet is substitute a set of known working injectors, or done a cold compression test as it ONLY happens cold starts. A slight misfire can happen too. Puzzling, its behaving like a jap diesel with glow plug issues, but has heaps of performance, uses very little fuel and runs perfectly at all other times. Valves, bores and pistons were as new. Travelled 160K, does it with or without performance ECU map.

Thanks Justin,
I would be interested to know if you find anything, as I think that could be the exact same issue!
The owner (family member) did mention it did seem slighty rough on one of the cold starts but it isnt consistent, where the smoke is repeatable when cold.
I will update you if I find anything else out.
Benz, I'm not sure its glowplug related as I never use them on my 90 really and its never done that.
Both cars are sw qld based so its not really ever cold.
