turning out to be a bigger job than simple one 'Cause of biong!

The new to me D2 had a couple of rocker cover leaks, it seemed the the crank case breather hoses points were blocked. After wrestling with the rockercovers as there is extra plumping for the sequential gas and trying to refit the upper plenum assembly, I had troble lining up the fitting bolts, so I raised it a little to have a look and Boing! the locater dowel jumped into the intake of cylinder #1.
I stuck one of those retractable prong tools down there, I tried a magnet on a string, I tried a bigger magnet on a string, ( it got stock, but finally got the magnet out.)
I pulled the spark plug out of number 1 and compressed air into it, hoping the dowel would just fly out.
I'm now looks like I need to remove the inlet manifold and find the dowel probably wedged at the inlet valve>

I don't dare turn the engine over, I can imagine broken inlet valve or cylinder holes

Can you get your hands on a boroscope? Would be easier to retrieve if you can see where it is.

You may be able to hire one. They are used extensively in light aircraft engine maintenance and is where I would be borrowing one from. Tis a bit hard to pick the car up and shake upside down.

Did the same (washer down carb) with a 186 in our SIIa, ended up pulling the head off as it went past the inlet valve... One of those father son bonding moments with colourful language.

Been there with a small hose clip. I put everything back together but couldn't find a fuel line hose clip so used a spare. Couldn't bring myself to start the motor until I found the lost item. Spent about 2 hours looking EVERYWHERE. In the shed....on top of the chassis....on top of the gear box. Finally took the plenum and trumpets off just to be 100% sure, and looked in each inlet with a small telescopic mirror and torch. It was sitting on a valve in number 5. It was a Saturday arvo, so I couldn't get a new inlet manifold gasket. So I looked around some auto shops and found this. It has a magnet on the end and also an LED light. Worked a treat! I think the shop was either Auto One or Auto Pro.

    Cheers

You can get USB borescopes for a reasonable price now.
Here's one from Jaycar - even has a magnet attachment to pick up "the screw that you thought was going to ruin your day"

I think I'm going to go the Colonoscopy route and get this.
Colour camera with pick up probes, hooks and magnet.

I figure if the docs can stick a camera up the clacker and cut off and remove polyps, then I can do the same with a lesser expensive option.

it will always come in handy for finding stuff, looking inside cylinders through the spark plug hole etc. for water leaks, scored bores etc

By the time you muck around I'd just pull the manifold off and be done with. Drop the rockers of the side it went down so it doesn't go donw a valve

Shaun it would of been a waste of time. The tool I picked up at 8.30am, fed it in and could see the valve but not dowell.
I then fixed the magnetic arm to the light and went in again. not a foreign object to be found.
the camera then spotted it as I had it out of the hole and it didn't go down where I saw it go, it bounced out and was in a hidden spot on the out side of the manifold.
Whilst trying to retrieve it i knocked it under neath and it was on top of the valley gasket. fed the camera down with the magnetic attachment and retrieved the dowell. All in under an hour. taking a punt and pulling the manifold off and all the sequential gas stuff would take a person like me with handycaps all day. Now I cab just refit everything.

    all up and running again.
wrestled for 2 hours trying to fit the new serpentine belt on.
Wrestling a 12 metre Anaconda on my own would have been easier

I must invest in a fan hub spanner it would have been a cinch getting it on without the fan blades in the way. 10 min job I'd reckon without that big obstruction.
