Which is stronger LT85 (lightweight) or R380?

    Guys,

This might be a no brainer but thought i would ask those that know more than me.

I have an LT85 split case (lightweight) 5 speed which has been running behind a V8. As far as I know it's all ok, as in works, changes fine etc etc.

I'm considering swapping out my tired 4 speed (LT95) for a 5 speed box so I'm wondering if it's worth it to just use the LT85 or should I go for an R380 out of a low K's disco?

Not so much concerned with cost etc, just wondering for long term which is the more reliable box, in your educated opinions.

Box will still be running behind a V8.

Thanks for any and all thought's.
    Cheers

    Mick

According to Ashcrofts the late model R380 is possibly slightly stronger than the LT85. However given Psimpson7's breakage of a low-k late model R380 in his TD5 90 I am not so sure...

If you have the LT85 I would use that. However if the LT85 needs a rebuild I would go for a late model R380 (suffix K/L I think).

So will an Lt85 bellhousing fit on an R380?

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

So would you say the LT85 (lightweight split case version) is just as strong as the bucket box version (heavy duty version)? If that's the case then the LT85 will be put to use.

As far as I know the LT85 is in usable condition and I'm willing to give it a go.
    Cheers

I have never owned a split case version. I have heard they are weaker, but not sure.

Some machining is required (at least to fit one behind an Isuzu LT85 bellhousing). C_H_T and a couple of others on here have ISUZU+LT85bellhousing+R380.

    from weakest to strongest..

    lt85 lightweight-r380-lt85 heavy duty.

theres not much between the last 2. and a later R380 may outdo the early lt85 HD.

Why would you bother, when a R380 -> V8 bellhousing is available standard. The reason they mod them is because no R380 -> Isuzu bellhousing exists.

This will sound dumb but how can i tell if I have a lightweight lt85 ? I have a lt85 santana 5speed that now has 400k on it and hasn't ever had a rebuild mind you gearbox oil has been changed every 5k alongside engine oil changes maybe this is the reason it hasn't needed a rebuild like alot of others I have seen needing them around the 100k mark which they then sometimes get a tapper roller bearing conversion to help last longer but if I was to put a new gearbox behind my turboed isuzu I would consider a few options...4speed lt95,late model 380 don't know about the 6speed box like in my puma even though they feel good, msa isuzu box like 2 people on here have or go all out and adapt an 6speed sequential offroad racing box

if you have a seam that runs the lenght of the box underneath it from bellhousing to overdrive you have the light duty split case model... Easier to work on but really doesnt like high power applications.
