    D1 springs into D2?

    G'day all,

I have a 1995 300tdi D1 which has 2" king springs and 245/75R16 maxxis bighorns on it. I also run 235/85R16 BFG Muddies for off roading.

I have just bought a 1999 D2 TD5 Auto with ACE, It has king springs but just standard height (seems to have given a 1" lift over standard) Can I just fit the D1 springs to the D2 and then get shocks to suit?

I read somewhere the D1 front springs give a extra 1" lift and you have to change the spring perches over. Is this correct?

I also have a pair of 35mm spring spacers to suit the D1. I'm after a minimum 2" lift but no more than 3" lift. I want to run the 235's all the time, and possibly looking at fitting 265/75R16 or even 285/75R16.

Do you loose too much castor on a D2 over 2" lifts? or is 4" when is starts wondering over the road?

I'm not sure about the springs.

But 235's and 265's will work well with a 2" lift. 285s do scrub a little bit with a 2"

if you are wanting a 33" tyre i would look at a 255 85 they seem to work better being that little bit skinnier.

If you plan on driving with them on the road i think swapping the tc gears to 1.4 high range from a defender would be a good idea.

With the castor i have driven a d2 with a 2" lift and it wondered over the road but then on the other hand discothaser on the forum used to run a 4 or 5 " kit and i dont think he had any castor correction. So i would not rush into it, lift it then drive it.

Also your abs and brake lines may become to short and also the watts link can bind, rovertym in the us have kinked watts links and longer lines.

    Thanks,

I am planning on fitting the 1.4's to the transfer as I tow a buggy around long distances alot, so want the gearing as correct as possible.

I think I will probably stick to a 32" size tyre as anything bigger will require alot of cash spent on axle/diff strength upgrades. looks like the 235's will be best as I won't loose as much steering lock.

Yeah I don't think i want to go any bigger than a 3" lift, may still extend the abs and brake lines as i'm going to make it have more down travel (as far as possible till the watts link is maxed). the car is mainly a daily drive and tow rig, but still want it to be capable off road.

i dont think the watts link will allow much more travel then a 2" lift shock.

have a look at rovertym they sell a kinked watts arm.

I think a fellow forum member has got around the binding issue by using an angle grinder
