Having just done this, I dont think so, I can't think why you would even conisder not removing it!
And for that matter, the exhasut! and in reality the floor panels and the tunnel to make it easier!
Just a quick question for brains trust! Is it possible to remove the gearbox from a 2000 td5 defender without removing the crossmember from the chassis?
It says in the haynes manual you only do it on non td5 defenders but I'll be buggered if I can see the bell housing ever fitting through... any help much appreciated!
Cheers

yes but its not fun..
as per all other defenders...
unbolt all the fruit as per a normal box pull.
remove the engine
remove the Tcase
pull the box out through the engine bay.
no need to remove that pesky removable cross member...
or
remove the door
remove the seat
remove the floor
insert a crane through the doorway
remove the Tcase
Remove the gearbox through the passanger compartment
no need to remove that pesky removeable cross member...
