    new (old) 300tdi

I have just purchased a low milage 300tdi from the UK and been thinking about what bits I will have replaced before installation. At this stage top of the list is Timing belt, idlers and possibly drive cogs, water pump and the lovley p gasket, lift pump, main rear seal. The manual says to replace the crank bolts that holds the flex plate would it be prudent to do as the manual says? Is there anything else that I should think about while the engine is out and can get the parts sent over with the engine?

    Cheers

IMHO I would consider refreshing it while it is out of the vehicle on a stand.
ie head gasket, big ends and mains, oil pressure relief spring, rear main & tseals.
Then do the timing case and ancillaries as you mentioned including vac pump, lift pump and water pump.

Wont take long and lets you get a look at what condition the engine is in, especially if you have bought it without knowing its history.

ID even go so far as pulling the end caps and plastigauging the bearings if your pulling it down that far, It'll only add about an hour or so to the job and it'll let you get an eyeball in on all the bearings.
