    LT95 Whining

    G'day everyone,

I have a 1984 V8 County with an LT95. For years there has always been a constant whine coming from the gearbox or transfer case, which I have been led to believe is normal for an LT95. However just recently this constant whine has changed to a distinct 'wah wah wah wah' whine that occurs about four times every second when travelling at stable highway speeds. The whine becomes constant again though when engine braking or accelerating or when travelling at speeds lower than 90km/h. This change in noise happened suddenly as well. One day it was not there, the next day it was.

Does anybody know what this noise might indicate? Is it worth worrying about or is it typical LT95 noise?

By the way, the gearbox and transfer case were rebuilt 250,000 km ago, and the gearbox shifts well and seems to work fine otherwise. Oils are also changed every 20,000 km.

    Thank you in advance!

    Edward

Most likely bearing or thrust washer noise from the transfer case but it could also be gear mesh noise. If the whining started when the reco was done it could be this if gears were interchanged (different wear patterns). You say it is worse on/off power. This suggests intermediate shaft thrust washer wear - does it jump out of high/low on engine braking. A properly set up box running the correct oil should not whine.

All gears are still original (only seals, bearings and thrust washers were replaced).

    No it doesn't.

I'll have another read of the LT95 oil threads. I've been using 20W-50 engine oil for both gearbox and transfer case. I've read that adding a couple of teaspoons of graphite powder to the oil aids lubrication of the thrust washers. Has anybody heard of this?

    Thanks!

I would think that 250Kk is quite a long time to go without an inspection of the transfer case intermediate shaft thrust washers and bearings and would recommend you take it to a specialist to check the endfloat.

If the thrust washers start to break up , the swarf blocks the lubrication holes in the intermediate shaft and stuffs the needle rollers. This may be the noise you hear. There are now mods that can be done to replace the thrust washers with tapered roller bearings.

Definitely would be worth dropping the transfer case sump plate and inspecting the intermediate shaft thrust washers.

Thanks for your help PhilipA and Bearman, i'll definitely have a look soon. Can the intermediate shaft thrust washers be replaced from underneath the vehicle?

    Edward

    YES BUT.
If you find them badly worn , you have to remove the intermediate shaft anyway so check the bearing surfaces , and check its central bore is not clogged, as this supplies oil to the bearings via an oil catcher . Don't be fooled if teh centre looks solid as it is supposed to be gun bored but can look solid if the swarf is compacted enough.
The noise you describe is more a bearing noise than a thrust washer noise which is usually just a LOT of slop causing clangs and bangs on power on/off. Any wear on the intermediate shaft bearing surfaces will cause lots of wah/wah noise.
Another common problem with these is that the centre diff thrust washers fail.

While the most likely source of your noise is the transfer case intermediate shaft there are lots of things that can cause the noise you describe, from a worn front bearing in the LT95 to a failed UJ to maybe failed diff pinion bearings.
By all means drop the transfer inspection plate and check the clearance of the Thrust washers, but if they are within spec you shouldn't worry about that being the noise. If you find a big gap then you should worry.LOL

If they are gone there should be lots of bronze in the oil.

Now if you find they are OK I suggest you look at the diffs' oils ( for silver), the UJs, and if all that is inconclusive take it to a specialist who is familiar with LT95s as it probably deeper and will need the transmission out.

If it is a bearing in the box it may be better to buy a second hand box.
Maybe there will be some army boxes on the market soon.
Do any of the REMLR guys know?
    Regards Philip A .
