    Spotlight wiring?

    I need some advise on spotlight wiring.
    I am a bit stupid when it comes to anything electrical.

    My Disco 1 came with spotlight already wired. The spotlight are LR but I am pretty sure the wiring was done post factory. It has a LR spotlight switch below the rear wiper switch and the relay and connector sits next to the brake master cylinder.
    I initially thought it was just the relay but a new relay hasn't helped.

    Now if you refer to the first wiring diagram here:

    My wiring is the same except 85 and 86 are swopped.
    86 is earth and 85 is the power from the switch.
    Before I swop these wire, and melt something, I want to know does this make a difference?

    The relay definitely clicks when I try to switch the spotlight on. The switch will only activate with the main beams on.

    There is power on 30 but when I active the spotlight switch, the power disappears??

    If I put direct power to 87 and 87a the spotlights come on.

    What is confusing me is that they did work at some stage.

    Trace the feed to terminal 30 and look for loose and dirty connections including corroded fuses. Or run a new wire and fuse from the battery. Otherwise it sounds OK to me.

    x2. The relay contains 2 separate circuits, one is an electromagnet from 85 to 86, polarity doesn't matter. The other is the power circuit, just 2 poles with a switch across them that is closed by the electromagnet. Again, polarity doesn't matter as it is just bits of metal being connected to one another. Nothing wrong downstream of the relay as you have tested and the lights work. Power into the relay under no load but fails under load, suggests a bad connection on the upstream side. Look for a connection with corrosion, discolouration or signs of insulation having got hot in the wiring from the battery to the relay. Bad contacts generate heat so this may help identify the problem connection.
    One more test to confirm the relay is okay, would be to disconnect the lights from 87 and test for power at 87 when the relay is closed but without the load of the spotlights.

    Thanks for the replies.

    It was a bad connection at the battery. Cleaned it up and it's all good.
    Seems there was 12v on terminal 30, but as soon as there was load/demand, because of the corrosion it dropped to nothing.
