    Question Using fuel, loosing power

Hi I am new to the forum so hope I am not traversing an old issue. I have a 4.6 HSE P38 Rangie. The motor was completely rebuilt about 30,000km ago. It has been running fine but I first noticed it was using about 25% more fuel according to the trip computer (give or take) and I started to notice that even though it felt fine to drive most of the time when I asked it to do some work, up hill, quick take off towing up a hill... that it wasn't delivering the same power. The extra fuel use is all the time but also more noticable when I am doing some work.

This morning it started for a split second this morning, stopped then took a lot of work to get it started it only ran well when the revs were over 2,500. After driving the car up the highway (mostly it drove ok except when the revs dropped) then after I stopped it kept running but wouldn't rev enough to drive. Tow truck to the shop and they tell me its the fuel pump. My knowledge is rudimentary at best but it seems odd to me that a problem with output from my fuel pump would result in my using more fuel. Am I just not understanding the complexities here?

There are a number of variables depending on what year your P38 is. My money though is on a failed MAF (air flow mwter) but you really need diagnosis from a Landy specialist.

Hi its a 95 model. New fuel pump has me going again won't know if it resolves the power/consumption issue. The mechanic thought they were probably separate problems and thought my best guess, deteriorating catalytic converters clogging the exhaust was probably to blame. If the problem persists and replacing the converters doesn't fix it I will move to the airflow meter next.
    Thanks

Get the maf checked first, its alot cheaper to check than new cats- remember check cheaper items first as its usually the little things that cause these issues.
