    Red light on D1 dash?

I own a 97 V8 D1 and have a faintly illuminated red light on the right hand side of the dash, just above the fuel guage. It has been illuminated for quite a while, but is so faint it is hardly noticeable, even when night driving. It is in the shape of the car and recently has started to get a little brighter on occasions before dimming down again. On closer inspection - when it does get brighter - it appears to have the shape of a key blacked out within it. I have searched through the vehicle hand book from front to back but have still been unable to locate a picture resembling what is on my dash. In the hand book it appears that there is a seat belt warning symbol located in this position in some vehicles. I would appreciate if anyone has an answer as to what this symbol represents, and I would appreciate it even more if someone could tell me how to get rid of it. It doesn't seem to be affecting anything I just don't like the fact that I have a red light on the dash. It makes me think that something is about to go wrong.

    Hey Lowranger

I have a 98 tdi D1 and have seen the same red light on my dash. I believe it is something to do with the immobiliser. The only time I have seen it light up is when the battery in my remote went flat and the immobiliser refused to let my car start until I locked the doors and unlocked them again (PAINFUL!! ).

My thoughts (for what they're worth) are your immobiliser may be about to play up possibly leaving you stranded. As I am currently doing, best to look into what's involved in either fixing it (search under "spider" or "immobiliser") or do what I'm about to do and bypass the &*#^@$%^ thing .

    Cheers

This is from the owners' manual:

As goldey suggested, maybe look into the "spider" immobilisation issue.

"Owners handbook" was what I was referring to when I said manual.
