Watch "Opposed Piston Opposed Cylinder Engine" Video at Engineering TV
Here is another German Invention!
Oh, and by the way! Let’s watch this invention closely, so we can observe the MANOEUVERING of the Oil Companies, Lawyers, Politicians, Unions and Wall Street, to cut this invention off at the knees, delay and/or even stop it’s development.
It’s called OPOC (Opposed Piston Opposed Cylinder), and it’s a turbocharged two-stroke, two-cylinder, with four pistons, two in each cylinder, that will run on gasoline, diesel or ethanol. The two pistons, inside a single cylinder, pump toward and away from each other, thus allowing a cycle to be completed twice as quickly as a conventional engine while balancing it's own loads.
The heavy lifting for this unconventional concept was performed Prof. Peter Hofbauer. During his 20 years at VW, Hofbauer headed up, among other things, development of VW’s first diesel engine and the VR6.
The OPOC has been in development for several years, and the company claims it’s 30 percent lighter, one quarter the size and achieves 50 percent better fuel economy than a conventional turbo diesel engine.
They are predicting 100 MPG in a conventional car!
Very cool!

Sounds good. I want one now for the Disco. What a fuel saving, and up to 650hp too. Bob
Which was a modification of the prewar Sulzer engines, which owed a lot to the Junkers WW1 submarine engines.
Opposed piston engines have been around for over a century, and some have been quite successful. Without watching the video (I am also watching internet usage, being on satellite I cannot afford too much video), I doubt very much whether this new design is particularly innovative.

looks pretty awesome.
way too big to fit in the defender at that size.
Maybe if they shrunk it to about 60% of that size it would fit, and then it might produce 350-400 hp?
plus it would be lighter than the standard engine and use less fuel...
if only this world was not controlled by greedy men in tall buildings.
Jaguar I think had a similar design, very clever. Pat
I wonder where it's at now, that vid was posted nearly three years ago.
I cant work out how they seal around the little end of the large (long) outside con rod, it seems from the video that the long con rod is outside of the bore, I may be wrong, But, Regards Frank.
from memory it went the dodo way for a while as the metalurgys not there for the rods that are under tension all the time.

When I was apprentice at the RAN school at Quakers hill, Sydney, [ HMAS Nirimba] , 1964-1968, an officer by the name of Vagg, developed a steam engine for cars, and developed it to the stage he had a prototype ready. He started the development in England, at the engineering school there. If anyone wants to know more, just google "vagg steam engine", really interesting story. Bob
