    Front shock towers

For reasons I will expand on later. I need to build up a set of front shock towers for the 'fender.
The folded tin witches hats wont accommodate the extra goodies that I have coming!
There are many variations on a theme from Gwyn Lewis 6ish mm folded flat bar, Expedition Exchanges adjustable towers or TerraFirma etal tube towers.

Any experience or reasons to copy these designs as opposed to coming up with something different?

so long as you get your alignment geometry right its DIY. If you're going for something rediculous consider setting up for a cross brace so you dont rip the shock mount away from the chassis due to torsional stress.

Rick this vid is a pretty good example of where I am going Airbumps should arrive in the next week or so, want them on ASAP, the park has just opened, first day trip tommorrow!

    Devon 4x4 Testing King Shocks

I was going to just bolt mount to the chassis (steer box mounts), but by incorporating some lateral stabilisation into the towers the setup will be more rigid. I guess I could just buy the Devon mounts but that wouldnt be as much fun!

At this early stage I will go with either three or four legs from heavy wall NB25... I think! Still deciding whether to stay with standard pin/pin shocks or play around?

    IMHO

pin/pin shocks are easier to setup and use the smallest space for install but eye/eye allow for greater flex if you have the space and can setup the geometry for them.

The Gwyn Lewis towers, although seemingly simplistic, work extremely well.I have them ,and there is no sign of any flexure or movement under load, and they are well proven in the British comp scene. They are also slightly offset to avoid the problem of the body of the shock hitting on the towers under articulation. This has been a problem with a lot of other designs over the years. The flat bar design would also lend itself to easily being modified to mount your bumpstops as well.

    Thanks Wayne,
Thats exactly what I was after.
I like the simplicity of their design.
The main support structure for the bump cans will be 6mm plate from the spring perch and chassis rails, the upper support will have less load and should pose no problems if i continue with 6mm or maybe 8mm flatbar design similar to the Gwyn Lewis tower.

I think there is a lot to be said for simplicity.
The Devon 4x4 mounts are very nice, and they obviously work, but you need to give up your first born and then sell a Kidney to be able to afford them.
I can measure my Gwyn Lewis towers if you need to confirm their thickness and width if you like.

    Would appreciate those measurements Wayne.
Ill stab a guess and call it 65x6 flat bar!

OK went out in between rain showers and measured the towers
The base is 60x6 flat bar,and it tapers to the top to be 50x6.The taper is on the outer edge, which help give 10mm extra clearance for large tyres on full compression.

    Hope this helps
