    Steering Box Woes

    I am attempting to produce a miracle or fluke a cure on a leaking 4bolt steering box.The sector shaft had pitting which I dressed up with some wet and dry,so it no longer looks as bad as the photo.Initially tried a redi sleeve but could not then fit the shaft through the needle roller bearings.Not sure if it would have worked anyway as the shaft moves up and down as it is adjusted so not possible to accurately judge where the seal makes contact.
    Assembling the box as I read the manual everything goes together fine until fitting the sector shaft cover when the worm seems to allow the follower to move too far when on RH lock and it jams.This sounded similar to a post last November where a flat spot in the centre of the worm jammed the steering also on RH lock?Did not sound feasible to me,surely when follower is in centre of worm and sector gear is centre of the rack the steering is in straight ahead position as per photo.Have tried setting the follower in a more biased to the left position,but after a couple of lock to lock movements,it seems to go just over 4 turns and jams!
    This is only a spare box so no great rush to complete,although I noted Island4x4 in the UK have new boxes going for $394,freight might be a killer.Anyone had a similar problem reassembling this box?

    Sorry to say Eddie but I bin them when the sector shaft gets pitted or grooved. They have a limited life span IME so best to toss it and buy a new one, comparitively not that expensive any more. $795 to $900 is very cheap for a new steering box, used Cruiser and Nissan ones are way more than that

    Besides, how old/ how many kms has it done? Sometimes new is the best course of action when playing with steering, brakes etcetc

    You can get the shaft ground a re hard chromed. Look for hydraulic cylinder repairers, they can point you in the right direction.

    solder and hand polishing works for a short while but you're in rebuild territory here.

    Just purchased a genuine 4 bolt steering box for my 2001 D2 Td5 from Melbourne City Landrover, bloke only charged me $517 for a brand newy!

    I highly recommend buying a new box as my Disco drives like a new car now.
