    Removing sump pan

I am removing the sump pan due to a stuffed thread (done by previous owners mechanic ) and reading others posts it seemed the pan just slipped out but it looks like I will have to remove the anti-roll bar to get it out on mine. Am i missing something here?

If I do remove the bar is there any risk in leaving it off?

Definately have to remove the ARbar, helps also if the suspension is at full droop.

Thanks JC, any adverse effects in leaving it off?

Can anyone tell what size spanners I need to remove the anti roll bar? I have to buy some bigger spanners to do the job the largest I have doesn't cut it.

From memory the ARB bolts at the chassis will be 17mm.
My technique is a ring spanner on the nut inside the bracket and 17 on the bolt with a rattle gun.

For the sump you can get away with leaving the ball joints in place, remove two chassis connections then drop bar to the ground.

Ive found that front ARBs on landies often come off and then fail to be reinstalled

I just took mine off last week when I refitted my Quaife.

In normal driving it is hardly noticable except for a smoother ride and less head toss.

Negatively It is most noticable on roundabouts and freeway enterances where the old girl will list like a liner. BTW most people have more roll stiffness than standard as they have swapped front springs from 133Lbs in to more eg mine are 160Lbs in.

Front articulation is much better without the ARB. I have personally seen Disco/with vs RRC/without on wombat holes and the RRC had about 4 inches better(2 each side).

I prefer it without but I am an old codger who doesn't need to outhandle M3s.

I got the sump out, cleaned it up and tried the bolt again. It starts off feeling normal then gets about 2/3 of the way spins loosely then tightens up right at the end. Seems to seal ok, but I am thinking whilst it is off I might get someone to look at it rather than have problems down the track with it.

Whilst the sump is out is there anything else I should do up in there? Is it worth doing the oil pick up strainer?

I tell you what owning a landy has improved my mechanical skills no end. Especially this week . Lucky I have a spare landy whilst the defender is off the road.

Forgot to mention I also found several small pieces of metal, like small pebbles. A couple of them were about 5mm. Doesn't sound good to me. What could these be from?

    Sump off?
-Id pull the big end caps and eye ball the bearings for undue wear - how many kays what model 300tdi?
-Pull the glow plugs so you can turn the engine over easily on the crank.
-Small bits of metal doesnt sound good but could be anything!
