TD5 Defender not starting every time

Debs Defender is playing up.Turn the key and no start, doesnt happen every time, sometimes goes second time, sometimes after several goes.
I have cleaned/inspected the trigger wire, made no difference.
No crank at all when its playing up.
    Starter motor brushes???

    Ideas please.
    Thanks
    Andrew

Hi Landyandy,I'm no expert but one thing to try would be to tap the starter motor next time this occurs to see if that changes anything. My TD5 130 does this now and again but always starts on the second try so I haven't pursued it.Check for oil in the harness as another idea.I replaced the engine end of the two part harness a while back and have not had the no start problem since then, but that might be a coincidence. Hope this helps. 130man.

Andy, Is the trigger wire energizing when you turn the key? If not focus on the relay and ignition barrel.
If it does, pull the starter and check the contacts in the solenoid. Follow the tutorials here for the tips not found in RAVE.

Andrew - yes it was intermitent. Don't recall the actual location. Will look at it in daylight tomorrow and advise.
