get it gone! plenty of places make a removal kit... dont bother with removing internals tho.. replace it with one of the kits

DO a search or look in the 'good oil' section on here and there are guides to removing the egr done by various people..

just done mine.. and removed the inlet manifold to clean as it really was incredibly sooty (around 3-6mm thick) inside the inlet manifold...

    PS... welcome!

Seeing as yours is an 03 model, it will be an EU3 engine, meaning the egr is cooled. In that case I don't see any point in removing it, you won't get any extra power gains from it.

Save the money and leave it as it is, you will be doing the environment a favour by keeping some of those nasty Nitric Oxides out of the atmosphere.

    when i

I think my EGR circulated bits of metal nicely, from one cylinder to the others, when it failed - ended up relining 3. Cylinders that is. I can imagine the EGR was a nice trick to get over the EU3 line when new but now older it's surely made us pay - and more - with sabotaged intake and manufactured junk.

Be warned though - on the D2 the radiator needs to come out, have a passage drilled and a new half length of hose fitted to make a neat job of removing the cooler.

Chuck that mofo out, and while you're at it, remove the cat and middle silencer as well.

Also check that your turbo is boosting at the correct pressure!

this is interesting - I'm also new to Aulro, and also have an '03 D2a - After reading many submissions here and elsewhere I am also considering ditching the EGR and removing the cat and middle silencer - but this is the first time I've heard that the EGR is 'cooled' and may be a bit more involved to remove in the '03 with EU3 engine.
Can someone please elaborate a bit - how do you know if you have one of these EU3 engines with a cooled EGR?
And is the hassle of taking it out really not worth the headaches?
    cheers in advance, Pete

If it's such a hassle, just keep it, I really don't see the benefits of taking it out.

On the front of the motor you will see a cylinder mounted inline with the recirc. pipe. This is the cooler. Early models just have the same pipe all the way through.

so a faulty stuck open egr pumping soot back into the engine is better for the environment? my deefers has just fell off after the egr was stuck... economy plummeted, power was down, and when i took the inlet manifold off, it was coated in a layer of soot between 3 and 6mm thick..

You dont get any direct power gains but the engine breathes better and people report better low down power. If its working Aok... then leave it i agree ... if its faulty and causing issues... get it gone.. and do your engine a favour... clean the inlet manifold and intercooler out too...

    Steve
