    Power steering

I know it's a 90 but I wanted a wider audience. Checking the wife's 90 today and there seems to be a lot of play in the steering shaft. I can turn it a good half a turn without the wheels moving. The steering is also very light and does not seem that precise. I have changed all the track rod ends and fitted a new drop arm a while ago. P/S box US or could something be done about it? The UJ's are fairly new so I know it's not them. It also has a slight leak but I am not too worried about that.

    TIA

Get someone to wiggle the steering while you see exactly where the play is. It may be in the steering box (and to some extent this is adjustable), but it is likely not to be. In particular, I would look for the pitman arm being loose on the pitman shaft of the box, and for movement in the panhard rod bushes. Also, make sure that the steering box is not loose. If I had to guess, I would say panhard rod bushes.

I assume by Pitman arm you mean what we call (British) the drop arm? By panhard rods I am assuming you mean the steering arm and tie rod?
If so it has new track rod ends on the steering arm and tie rod. They move freely but do not have any play. I fitted a new drop arm recently as the old one was moving on the shaft and the splines on it were pretty worn. I grabbed the link from the steering wheel inside the engine bay and could move it very freely without any other parts moving.
How would I adjust play in the steering box?

    Thanks

The panhard rod (singular) holds the front axle from moving sideways. A common problem is for wear in the bush at each end allowing the axle to move without steering, or steering itself randomly.

See post by Beeutey - panhard rod is the link that stops the axle from moving sideways relative to the chassis

Are you sure the new one is not moving as well? - very likely if the splines on the shaft are worn.

To adjust the free play in the steering box, either jack up both front wheels or disconnect the drag link from the drop arm, so there is no resistance to turning the wheel. On top of the box, directly above the output shaft, is a lock nut and screw. Loosen the locknut and tighten the screw, to remove as much play as possible, should be down to 9.5mm on the rim of the wheel, but importantly, without there being any tight spots anywhere from lock to lock. Tighten the locknut and recheck for any tight spots. This only removes free play that is due to end play on the output shaft, and cannot remove play due to wear elsewhere, and if this does not fix the problem you are looking at a box overhaul or replacement.
