    Scrap or Fix

Hi Guys Im New to the forum.

I am after some advice.....I have a 2001 V8 man Disco2, I blew a head gasket the other day (water/steam flowing out exhaust & bubbles in water bottle), rang around and no-one will touch it. Called a LR dealer and they said the V8 dont blow head gaskets they crack heads...Is this true?? and he also said they are a nightmare of a job to do....Is this also true.

I have built a few holden and ford V8's and 6's, so Im not sure about this flavour of car.

    Any advice welcome/needed.

    Regards

    you fix it...

worst case scenario is a new block and sorted heads.

best case is a set of sorted heads and new gaskets onto the old block so you dont even have to pull it to fix it.

While its out you can fixgrade it.

Good thing you came here then, the advice you have been given isn't very accurate OR helpful.

The engine is 1960's technology, headgasket and/or slipped liner/s are the most likely suspects, very rare to crack heads.

Easy to fix, my advice is to take this opportunity to upgrade to a 4.6 hi compression top hat liner short engine, you will never look back.

Thing is Im wondering is the car worth fixing or scrapping, as I dont want to spend more than its worth to fix it.

2001 V8 manual, 300,000 kms, skubs gas tanks & cut down side petrol tank, everything else is standard.

Whats it worth fixed, whats it worth to sell as is or wreck??

fixed and rego it might be worth 10K if its in perfect nick

non running youd be lucky to pick $2k for it.

pre stripped as bits you might just about make $5k if you're really lucky.

providing the blocks ok and the liners have held up It shouldn cost $2k to fix it if you do most of the work yourself.

Well, it is practically worthless as a wreck - the diffs are pretty much worn at these KM, so is the transfer and trans, so I would be budgetting for spending $5to$7k at least on the engine repairs, after that it is worth sub 10K, or scrapping it for very little (Around 2K) and buying another low KM later (2002/3) D2 if that is the way you want to go. All this depends on the gas tanks being in date etc.
If the gas tanks etc are 10 years old and require recertifying I wouldn't fix it at all.

True Garry, but these engines are still quite exxy second hand and then more $$$ fitted to the vehicle etc, and lets face it, better the devil you know than buying another possible head/ liner issue in my opinion...fitted a used one to a customers 2000 D2 and it lasted 3 months, corroded block face and subsequent head gasket failure....was a total headache trying to get another engine out of them and get paid to fit it I've had heads off these at 65K for coolant leaks, they have a history...

Thanksfor all the advice, It is very much appreciated. I have decided to rip the head off and check the head gasket, and will take it from there. If it is going to be uneconimical to repair keep lookout for a cheap disco for sale as is...lol
