    ZF 4HP24 into a TD5 D2A?

I just spent an hour with Bill Rolfe from A&B AUtos in Sth Dandenong looking at how to make a 4HP22 survive up to 500nm of torque. We went through all the options, some of which involve shifting the transmission rearwards, and start to need custom shafts etc. But then, he started going on about how a 50mm adaptor plate would allow the V8's 4HP24 to bolt straight in in the stock position, as well as give a much sturdier mount for the transmission, less vibration etc.

It cant be that simple....can it? Bill offered to lend me some housings to do the measurements etc, and then it could be laser cut out of steel, or aluminium. I assumed he knows what he is talking about....but thought I would ask the forum. What about electronics etc?

I'll be watching this with great interest - although i am a bit off topic - sorry..
I am thinking of converting my Disco td5 manual to automatic but i can only find a used auto gearbox from a v8 (Disco td5's are extremely rare here in Greece) and then i could order a compushift and a torque converter from Ashcroft..

This Ashcrofts page has heaps of details about upgrading a 22 to a 24:

    Ashcroft Transmissions - ZF4HP22

I would think they would have an adaptor for the 24 (in place of a 22) or even for the 22 with 24 internals.

Also looks like the torque converter from an early 4.6 is the biggest and strongest (no surprise I guess).

I have one of their TCs ready to go into 22....thats what started the conversation with Bill. Ad the rebuild options I discussed with Bill were pretty much whats on the Ashcroft page you linked to above.

I had issues trying to find someone to sell a 4.6 TC seperate from an auto assy when I had top rebuild mine and was upgrading. We ended up comparing the size of the larger to the benefits of a custom built based on the original size. It was cheaper to custom build than buy a second hand and reco.

Also I didn't put 24 internals, just got some better clutches (from something else and modified), plus extra clutches. Only cost 3K for complete rebuild, with custom work TC and internals.

computec make a kit for the shifting so you can make it click and go auto or you can make it flick up or down just like any modern auto.

when i get the $$ back together after moving this is what I intend to do

I'll be following this too. Would this be with the bigger of the V8 torque converters adjusted to suit the TD5... or a modified TD5 flex plate. I'm guessing he will also adjust the shift points etc on the 24 to suit the TD5.

    This would be fantastic.
    Cheers

Been waiting for you to pop up slunnie...

Is the collective wisdom that this could work? Bill seems to think its a cheaper, and better option. I just cant believe if its that simple, that it hasnt been done before.

the other suggestion I had was just to swap bell housings....

But that doesnt fix what Bill thinks is a major problem. He believes a lot of the issues that we have with the22, on the TD5, is the way the bellhousing bolts up to the engine. There are only 2 (or 4?) bolts around the side and top that bolt to the engine. The bottom two, bolt to the sump. Its not exactly the most rigid setup.

The remaining issue is the effectiveness of the valve body. I actually was speaking to Wholesale Automatics recently who were asking about using my car as the test dummy for doing a valve body on the TD5. Maybe I persuade them to do it on the 24. The upgrade path for transmissions then becomes buy a 24, change the bell housing, fit the custom valve body.
