Looking in Bunnings for rivets to do some repairs on the series 3. The largest diameter is 4.8mm but the holes (previously occupied by rivets that are long gone) seem larger. Is there a standard size and length of rivet to use on the series land rovers? If it is bigger than 4.8 I'm guessing you need to go to a fastener place to get them? And will a bigger rivet make riveting hard using a standard hand pop rivet gun? I'm guessing originally they would have all been "proper" rivets, which I know are still available but how do you fit them, is there a special tool required? I think all of mine bar the ones holding the roof to the gutter are pop rivets.
2nd question, the spare wheel carrier is held to the bonnet with small screws with nuts, but they were originally riveted. Which is going to be the strongest way to hold it on there? A couple are missing so I want to refit it properly.
Sorry I don't own a series, but I have just replaced the lower door sill rubber seals on my Defender and I used 4.8mm diameter rivets into the existing holes. Once the rivet head pulls up it will be just over 6mm.
For keeping the spare wheel carrier on the bonnet, I would be using stainless steel bolts and nyloc nuts.
Cheers
