POD was the 1988 a 3.5 or 3.9 (3.9 only came in 89 model) . If a 3.5 it is a 2HP22 not a 4HP22 like a 3.9 trans and theoretically is too weak for a 3.9.1; The 1988 box had a very poor shift pattern, changing up way too early when pulling away from a standing start. This was much improved in the 1991 model. Would a swap of the valve bodies give the old box the shift characteristics of the later box?
The shift pattern depends on the setting of the kickdown cable. The more showing the higher the shifts.
AFAIR the 2HP22 torque converter locks up at about 60KMh not 85kmh like a 3.9.

) but the lock up clutch and most of the internals chewed themselves to bits within 6000miles
. 550Nm will do that to a 4HP22....
