    TD5 Radiator Blank Spigot. EU3 to EU2

    Just need clarification please.

Removed the EGR cooler the other month. Now I've got the appropriate fittings and hose to convert the coolant system from EU3 back to EU2.

Part of the job is to drill out the blank spigot at the bottom of the rad. to fit the lower radiator feed hose from the oil cooler return pipe.

My question is.What size should the blank spigot be drilled out to?

    I'm leaning towards about 10.0mm.

The reason I ask is the spigot for the fuel cooler feed hose only has a 3.5-4.0mm hole in it.

I just want to check whether this should be the same for the lower rad. feed hose. Or go ahead and open up the blank spigot with a 10.0mm hole.

    Many Thanks,
    Tod.

    Hi
A while back I replaced the radiator in our 2000 disco td5 pre eu3 the radiator came with the spigot and blanked hole you are talking about, not drilled. This is for the return pipe from the oil cooler and as it states in the rave manual

    Oil cooler
The oil cooler is located on the left hand side of the engine block behind the oil centrifuge and oil filter. Oil from the oil
pump is passed through a heat exchanger which is surrounded by coolant in a housing on the side of the engine.
Full water pump flow is directed along the cooler housing which also distributes the flow evenly along the block into
three core holes for cylinder cooling. This cools the engine oil before it is passed into the engine. A small percentage
of the coolant from the oil cooler passes into a metal pipe behind the engine. It then flows into the lower radiator via
    a hose.

this pipe only carries a small percentage of coolant, I have left the hole undrilled capped it and capped the port on the back of the oil cooler and I have not experianced any problems you still get good flow over your oil cooler. I have 2 hose's and one pipe less to leak. I regulary check the cap on the oil cooler as it is close to the turbo and would assume it can get pretty hot down there, in saying that there would also be a fair amount of air flow past it to cool it.

I'm not sure that everone would agree with this method but I have read after i did this on another thread ( not sure how to find it again) of it being done before.

If you where going to drill it, my old radiator which is still hanging around has a 10mm hole, according to the rave diagram for pre eu3 thats the one that the oil cooler return goes to, the one below it is for the fuel cooler and is restricted to the size you have already noted.

    hope this helps

    Good man, db65boxer.

    Exactly what I was after.

I had read the same in the rave manual too.

Interesting that you took the approach to blank the oil cooler off. Would of thought it was needed for Aus. conditions. Maybe not so back in the mother land.

    Thanks again,
    Tod.

    Glad to be of help

If you read and look closely at the diagrams under cooling system and engine of your rave cd you will see that I have not blocked the flow of coolant to the oil cooler, Iv'e been in the trade for over 25 years and would never do that to my engine.

I assume you removed the whole egr system hence the the removal of the cooler, a wise choice, I don't want dirty hot exhaust gas going in my intake either.

    Cheers db
