    Winch wiring question

There seems to be differing opinions (at least locally) as to whether an electric winch should be wired from the primary starting battery, or the secondary battery, in a dual battery system.

I would appreciate advice/recommendations/logic as to which is considered the most appropriate battery to wire it from. Thanks

    Primary.

Secondary is a bad idea. Mainly due to the potential current draw through what ever isolating set up you have.

I have rigged mine up to the secondary battery & have the biggest manual isolator - a truck one.
Both setups have pro's & cons.
I guess rigged up to the main battery - if the reserve battery is isolated when winching & you flatten the main, you can always kick in the spare battery to restart if you stall.
I remember rescuing some guys who flattened both on a steep haul (they were alone & had to camp there) as the motor cut out nearly at the top.

I find if you run the motor, two batteries can give you a fair amount of winching, especially if you rest the winch & have a reasonable alternator.

To add to Deejays comments, I also have massive manual isolators on both our winch equipped cars (500amp continous) so it doesnt really matter for me, but if you have fancy ones they will not cope with anywhere near the max draw the winch can manage.

I never really disconnect my 2 batteries, but the option is there if needed - extended stay with the fridge etc.
