300Tdi head gasket. Re-torquing required afterwards?

    Hi All

I mentioned this on my timing belt thread but it got buried.

Ive blown the head gasket after 231000km

It mus have just went on the trip to the mechanics for a service. It has a coolant alarm which beeped quickly once and I topped it up about 500ml about three weeks ago. No coolant issues since then. So I'm hoping it's not warped or cooked or any sundry nightmares that go with blown gaskets.

Is there anything I should ask them to do while the head is off? Valves or somesuch?

Also it's going to be tight for time before the we leave on the trip out bush. Somebody told me that a retorquing regime is needed (eg drive 250km and then send it back in) after the head has been off. Do you guys have a recommended procedure? If I have to do something, I'll only have a week to do it in.

Any advbice gratefully received as always.

    thanks J

230K is about right ballpark for 300Tdi head gasket failures sometimes James, I daren't mention it the other day incase it happened and I'd get blamed

No need for retorque, new bolts should be used, although not strictly necessary, they are cheap enough so may aswell.

A return and tappet clearance and hose/ coolant level check after a few hundred km may well be worthwhile though, if you have time.

Might be worthwhile checking out..... There is a new updated cylinder head, with extra cooling galleries. This is used with a new multilayered stainless steel head gasket. I know you were saying the coin's a bit tight at the moment, but while the head's off, might be a good time to update to the latest update.......

thanks PhilnSue. Normally i would be very interested but i just made up my mind to sell the Defender next year or two and get a 2nd hand Rangie Sport with a big fat loan from the bank. Helping a mate find a TDV8 has led me off the True Path.

i did a head replacement late last year (258k) and NO you do not have to re-torque the head bolts as they are torque to yield (TTY). i also got the head from turners england brilliant service and price

I did reply to the other thread but not sure where it's gone. Ensure you get a Bearmach timing belt kit with the forged crank pulley. The LR ones that are spot welded are useless and do break very easily.
With reference to re-torquing the head, as bigcarle says, you do not have to re-torque it. The torquing is done by using torque angles. So, unless you undo all the bolts again and start from scratch I can't see how you could re-torque the head. As far as I am aware the only settings for the head bolts are specified in angles (i.e. tighten up to 90NM and then 90 degrees, then a further 20 degrees (not sure the 90NM is correct)).
